This lightweight yet cozy slouch hat is made using the classic granny stitch, an airy stitch that’s perfect for those transitional months between summer and fall otherwise known as Hotumn (Hot + Autumn).

With its soft slouch, breathable texture, this cozy crochet hat is stylish, comfortable, and super easy to crochet!

A woman with straight, shoulder-length hair smiles at the camera while wearing a simple granny stitch crochet beanie and a denim jacket, indoors with light streaming through windows in the background.

As the seasons crossover from summer to fall all too quickly, especially here in a country that sees more cooler weather than warm, I was inspired while wandering around Michaels with all their fall and Halloween decor. It kinda got me thinking more about new crochet projects for fall and, and the Chloe Slouchy Hat was the perfect easy crochet pattern to share.

Three crocheted beanies in pastel hues—sage green, dusty pink, and light beige—overlap on a white surface, their textured patterns reminiscent of a simple granny stitch crochet beanie.

What is Hotumn?

Let’s call this in-between season Hotumn – that fleeting, slice of time when summer refuses to fully let go, even though autumn is already knocking. It’s the perfect time to pull out your crochet beanie stash or start a new project like this granny stitch hat.

And if you want a matching counterpart for spring moving into summer, that’s Sprummer, another short and sweet stretch when the flowers bloom and the sun gets stronger.

Why the Chloe Slouchy Hat is the Best Granny Stitch Crochet Hat Pattern for Hotumn

What you’ll love about this pattern:

  • 1. Breathable Warmth
Thanks to the granny stitch crochet hat pattern, this hat creates a lacy, open texture:
Just enough airflow for warmer daytime temps
Yet dense enough to trap some warmth for breezy evenings
This balance makes it perfect for those Hotumn moments where you feel a little cold but also a little bit sweaty.
    2. Stylishly Slouchy
This slouch hat has a laid-back vibe that fits Hotumn perfectly:
Not quite a winter toque, but still warm and stylish
Pairs effortlessly with flannel shirts, denim shorts, or sweaters
Great for indoor wear without overheating
    3. Great for Layering Looks
You might not need your full parka yet, but this hat adds:
Texture and cosiness to your outfit
A nice pop of colour to match that pile of burnt orange leaves
Comfy ear coverage for outdoor markets or walks
    4. Quick and Easy Project
The granny stitch is a quick easy project — ideal when Hotumn doesn’t last long:
Works up fast with worsted weight yarn or even bulky yarn
Perfect for a weekend or last-minute gift
Great way to use up your yarn stash – especially fall-toned scraps
Can be finished in a single evening if you’re focused
    5. So Many Colour Combinations
    Think:
    Burnt orange
    Deep mustard
    Rust
    Clay pink
    Dusty rose
    Olive
Warm neutrals mixed with pops of summer brights
The granny stitch hat shows off colours beautifully, making it a favorite thing to work on and wear.

If you’re comfortable with pattern modifications, you can adjust the size by adding or reducing stitches or rows. To make the item larger, increase the number of stitches or rows; to make it smaller, decrease them. Always check your gauge to ensure the final size matches your desired fit.

Please note that I’m unable to provide assistance with pattern adjustments. I appreciate your understanding and hope these tips help you achieve the perfect size!

When crochet items don’t turn out the right size, it’s usually due to one of three factors: stitch count, yarn choice, or tension. To ensure your project matches the pattern, always make a gauge swatch. If your swatch doesn’t match the gauge, you may need to adjust either your yarn or crochet hook size to get the correct measurements.

The Chloe Slouchy Hat is a perfect project for those fleeting Hotumn days, quick to make, easy to customize, and a stylish addition to your wardrobe. Whether you’re working from your yarn stash or picking up new yarn, this granny stitch hat will quickly become one of your favorite things to crochet.

Gauge

12 rows and 12 sc = 4” X 4”

A gauge swatch is vital for a well-fitting crochet hat. It determines stitch tension and measures the number of stitches and rows. Comparing it to the pattern’s gauge ensures the final hat fits as desired. Adjust hook or tension if needed for a perfectly fitting hat.

Because the texture of this hat is worked in rounds the gauge will be based on a swatch of rows made in single crochet.

The number or rows is not needed for this swatch as you will be working the number or rounds based on a measurement and not a round count. But it is recommended to do at least 6 rows for your gauge swatch.
