5 reasons to use Bernat Blanket Super Bulky yarn for crochet throw!

Crocheters everywhere know and love Bernat Blanket Super Bulky yarn because of its amazing texture and warmth. This yarn is perfect for crochet throws, blankets, and other projects that need a lot of drape.

Here are five reasons to start using Bernat Blanket Super Bulky in your next project:

  • 1. Its textured surface is perfect for adding a softness and coziness to your crochet projects.
  • 2. It’s super bulky, and will hold its shape well even when used in large quantities.
  • 3. It’s incredibly warm and soft, making it the perfect choice for winter projects.
  • 4. It’s also machine washable and dryable, so you can keep your project always looking great! I have a cat and a dog which have each claimed a blanket made from this yarn as their own. I wash them all the time and am amazed how great they still look!
  • 5. And last but not least – this yarn comes in a wide range of colors, so you’re sure to find the perfect one for your project!

What size crochet hook should I use with Bernat blanket super bulky yarn?

When it comes to crochet, one of the most important things to consider is the size of crochet hook you will need. Even though the Bernat blanket super bulky yarn and calls for an 8mm crochet hook I have pumped this all the way up to a 15mm.

This yarn is very thick and dense, so working with an even larger crochet hook is totally okay! In fact it is GREAT! Using such a large hook doesn’t only mean that your crochet blanket will work up super fast but it will also have a beautiful drape to it making it super soft and cozy.

How many skies of Bernat blanket super bulky yarn do you need for a crochet throw?

Bernat Blanket Super Bulky yarn is a great option for crocheters looking for a heavy weight yarn. Each ball of Bernat Blanket Super Bulky yarn is about 300 grams/200 meters, so you will need between approximately 6-7 balls to make a crochet throw size blanket.

Available in limitless colour options with a simple, mild variegation, Bernat Blanket lends a touch personalization to any decor. This is such a beautiful decoration-yarn and after making a few blankets that my dog and cat have taken over I can tell you honestly it lasts forever!

What yarn is a good substitute for the Bernat Blanket Super Bulky Yarn?

Below are some great yarns you can substitute for the Bernat Blanket yarn if you cannot find, already have on hand or would just like to use something different!

Loops and Threads Sweet Snuggles Lite in an Excellent Sub!

The gauge, texture and content of this yarn matches exactly making it a great choice as a substitute yarn

Bernat Baby Blanket is a Great Sub!

The gauge, texture and content of this yarn matches exactly making it a great choice as a substitute yarn

Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick N Quick

This is a great substitute if you are looking for a classic crochet throw. This yarn comes in an array of beautiful colours and is a combination of wool and acrylic. Note however, this yarn DOES NOT wear as well as the Bernat Blanket.

I have crocheted a few throws with this yarn and it doesn’t take long before they start to look pilled and worn. If you are using as an accent piece and it will not be seeing much action then I say go for it! This is the yarn for you!

How to Resize this Crochet Throw Pattern

Changing the size of this crochet throw couldn’t be easier! The crochet blanket made from this pattern will be 50″ x 60″. If you wish to make it longer or shorter adjust the length of your starting chain. To change the width of this throw, crochet more or less rows.

This pattern calls for a multiple of 2 + 1.

For this pattern a starting chain of 91. So written another way would be 90 + 1. So just chain a number divisible by 2 then pop one extra chain on the end.

IMPORTANT NOTES ON RESIZING THIS CROCHET THROW

Please take note! This blanket is worked sideways. Which means the rows being crocheted are the length of the throw not the width.

We will start by making a chain of 91 stitches and this will equal approximately 60″ which is the length of the throw.

If you want to make it longer you will want to add extra chains at this point.

If you want to change the width of this crochet throw then simply crochet less or more rows.

Chain 91

We will start by making a chain of 91 stitches and this will equal approximately 60″ which is the length of the throw.

If you want to adjust the length of the throw you will want to chain more or less for your starting chain.  Just be sure that it is a multiple of 2 + 1.

Row 1: Hdc in 1st st, slst in next st. *Hdc in next st, slst in next st* repeat from *to* until end of row. Ch 1, turn. (90)

Row 2: Hdc in 1st slst, slst into next hdc. *Hdc in next st, slst in next st* repeat from *to* until end of row. Ch 1, turn. (90)

Continue to repeat row 2 until your throw measures 50” or desired width.

You can stop here if you are happy with how the throw looks. If you would like to add the edging as shown in the photo read on…

Finishing Edge

Work a single crochet around the whole blanket. Be sure to work 3 sc in each corner stitch.

Once this round is complete you can then move onto the round of reverse single crochet remembering to work a rsc in each of the three corner stitches.

That’s it! All you need to is fasten off choose more yarn and keep hooking!

Thank you so much for this pattern, I had yarn for a blanket for my grandson but wanted it to be fairly fast. Then I found you! I am delighted with the result. I plan on doing another in plain yarn, his is variegated but the stitches still show nicely.

Enjoyed your video tutorial on the throw, I’m making a baby blanket, so I will be down sizing the pattern. Love the fringe idea and just need a little more clarification on the reverse stitch. Thank you

Happy to help – In the video I do show how to do the reverse single crochet. There are timestamps so you can skip right to that part. 🙂

Be sure to let me know how you make out!
