The Yarn

I chose to make these adorable rustic farmhouse pumpkins out of Lion’s Brand Wool-Ease Thick’N’Quick.  Initially I was drawn to this yarn because I had previously used the Coney Island for my Super Bulky Hat tutorial.  The colours are stunning especially for this time of the year.  Warm orange, green and yellow tones that remind me of the beautiful maple trees as they turn colour here in the fall.

•  The Wool-Ease Thick’N’Quick is a super bulky (6) yarn and I wanted to use a yarn that would work up quickly so this was a perfect choice.

•  It is made of 20% wool and 80% acrylic, it is has the look of wool giving it a warm classic texture and will wash up great because of its acrylic component.

•  Wool-Ease Thick’N’Quick comes in a wide assortment of colours that coordinate beautifully with their variegated ones making it easy to match to any decor.

•  This yarn is also very easy to use with larger or smaller hooks so it is a favourite when designing, and makes it great for beginners to use.

Designers Notes

  •    Pumpkin is worked bottom up in increasing rounds.
  •    Increases stop where special stitch begins.
  •    Adding increase rounds will result in a wider pumpkin.
  •    Adding additional rounds will result in a taller pumpkin.
  •    Depending what size you make the base of the pumpkin may be very rippled before you start             crocheting the sides.
  •    Yarn calls for 9.00 mm, but a hook 8.00 mm is used for this design.
  •    Easily sub any yarn but keep the hook smaller than recommended.
  •    Subbing yarn will result in a different sized pumpkin than noted on crochet pattern.
  •    More stuffing will result in a slightly firmer and bigger pumpkin.
  •    Pattern written in standard american terms.
  •    You will note that this design calls for a smaller hook than recommended on the yarn.  This is so     the crochet pumpkin is firm and the stuffing doesn’t poke out.
  •    Note that the hdc counts as one stitch and the ch 1 also counts as a stitch.

Finishing Steps

1. Stuff it

At this point you will want to stuff your pumpkin with poly-fil to desired firmness.  I filled mine quite full as it made for a better shape when done.  If you want them to be a bit squishier use less filling.

2. Close the top

Using a yarn needle and tail of yarn weave the needle back and forth between stitches and pull as you go until the top of pumpkin is closed.  Keep the yarn on the needle for the next step.

3. Shape the pumpkin

Helpful Hint –  Lay the yarn where you want it to go and adjust placement as needed before pushing needle up through the centre of the pumpkin.

Keeping the yarn in the needle, wrap yarn down the side of the pumpkin to the centre bottom and push needle up through the centre top.  Pull yarn tight until you see the pumpkin taking shape.

Keep the yarn pulled as tight as possible while you repeat this process wrapping the yarn down the side of the pumpkin and up through the middle until the pumpkin has six even sections.  Once all sections are complete weave in the yarn 2-3 times at the bottom of the pumpkin and fasten off.

4. Top it off

There are many ways to top off your pumpkin so I recommend thinking about how they will be used.  Initially I made them for our mantle so the twigs were perfect, but as I made more I thought how much my grandkids would like them so decided to finish a few off with a loop of ribbon so they could easily carry them around.

  1. Hi, I really like your blog and your videos…. you are very easy to follow and have such a nice way of explaining the “how to’s”.
I would really like a video that is more instructive and slower as you mention in your video – for a newbie that I am. I know the basic stitches so far but have never done a round. I look forward to this as I really would like to make these cute little pumpkins! I am going to look for more on your website, as I would really like to try a hat also!

    thank you so much!
    Joanie

  2. Hi Cyprianne,
I’m just wondering if I’ve read the pattern wrong. In step 3 of each pattern there are a certain number of stitches. In step 4 we make an HDC ch1 then skip the next stitch, but it says we still have the same number of stitches as in step 3. If you only stitch in every other stitch you will have half as many stitches. Have I missed something?

    1. Great question Robin :) The HDC counts as one stitch and the ch 1 also counts as a stitch. I can see how this could be a little confusing. So… I will add that in right now for anyone else who may have the same question :)
