Construction of the Sock Monkey Hood
Starting with the hood, the initial rounds build the base, gradually increasing stitches to form the hood. After reaching the desired height, the pattern transitions to working in rows.
Following the completion of the rows, the cowl is seamlessly integrated by working along the bottom edge of the hood. The transition is made with a change to an 8.00 mm hook and the addition of a contrasting cream and red yarn.
The cowl consists of rows of half-double crochet stitches, alternating between different colours to create the striping in the cowl. This is a great chance to personalize changing your yarn colour to that of sports team, bright colours or just a favourite colour making it a popular choice for both boys and little girls.
The construction is completed by joining the short ends of the cowl with slip stitches.
Then, two optional ears are crafted in continuous rounds, contributing to the whimsical character of the hooded cowl. The final touch involves sewing the ears onto the hood using a provided photo as a guide.
Substituting yarn
When substituting yarns for a crochet pattern, it’s crucial to keep the gauge as close as possible to the original yarn. Gauge refers to the number of stitches and rows in a given area of the crochet fabric, and it affects the size and shape of the finished project.
If the gauge of the substitute yarn is significantly different from the original yarn, the project’s feel and look may be affected. To ensure that the finished project looks and feels as close to the original design as possible, make a swatch with the substitute yarn and compare it to the original yarn swatch to match the gauge.

How to Attach Ears to Hood
(EARS ARE TOTALLY OPTIONAL!)
Five tips for sewing ears to a crochet hood that will make the process easier for beginners:
Position Ears Correctly:
The first and most crucial step is to ensure you position the ears correctly on the hood. Use stitch markers or pins to mark the spots where you want the ears to be placed. They should be symmetrical and at the right height on either side of the hood. This initial step sets the foundation for a well-balanced and cute final result.
Weave in Yarn Ends:
Before attaching the ears, make sure all yarn ends from your crochet work are securely woven in. It’s much easier to weave in these ends before the ears are attached, as it can be tricky to access the inside of the hood once the ears are in place. Neatly woven-in yarn ends also contribute to the overall polished look of the project.
Use the Same Yarn:
When sewing the ears onto the hood, use the same yarn you used to crochet the hood itself. This ensures a seamless blend and uniform appearance. For beginners, this is especially important because it hides the attachment points better and makes any inconsistencies less noticeable.
Whip Stitch or Slip Stitch:
For attaching the ears, consider using a whip stitch or slip stitch. These techniques create a secure and neat attachment. Be mindful of the tension; the stitches should be tight enough to hold the ear firmly in place but not so tight that they distort the shape of the ear or the hood.
Firmly Secure the Ears:
To ensure the ears stay in place, stitch them firmly and make several passes around the edges. You want them to be securely fastened to the hood. Once attached, give them a gentle tug to ensure they are properly secured. You can also add a few extra stitches at the base of the ears to reinforce the attachment.
Remember that practice makes perfect, so don’t be discouraged if it takes a few attempts to get it just right.
