Last Updated on January 10, 2023 by Cyprianne Nolan

Halloween is fast approaching and if it is as cold where you are, as it is where I live, you will have a true appreciation for crochet hooded cowl that is going to keep you toasty warm while you get all those goodies.

A little about this pattern, this cozy hood has a beautiful texture that runs all over the entire hood and a cowl that will keep the cold winds from going down your back.  The hood has lots of wiggle room so it is perfect for layering (or not) depending how cold it is and includes 4 sizes toddler, child (2 sizes) and adult with the instructions for each size written separately for easy reading.

Perhaps a cute lion family this fall?

Who can make this?

I would consider this pattern to be intermediate the increases are not difficult and it uses a combination of chain stitches and double crochet so, if you’re good at keeping track and locating stitches then, this hood will be a breeze. I would only recommend it though for people who have crocheted before.

How to Crochet a Hooded Cowl

A crochet hooded cowl may look a little confusing to make but it is far easier than it looks.

Let’s break it down…

  1. To start, this hooded cowl you are going to start just like you are crocheting hat. The hood starts with normal increase rounds which create the part that will cover the back of your head.
  2. Once those rounds are finished you are going to start working in rows. These rows will not be joined. This is creating the part that will sit on top of your head and at the base of your neck.
  3. When all these rows are finished, the cowl is made by working the first row while attaching to the base of the hood. Each round or row made adds to the height of the cowl.

Best yarn for this pattern

LIONS BRAND WOOL EASE THICK N QUICK is a perfect choice for the hooded cowl. Unfortunately though I couldn’t find the exact colours I was hoping to use so used Loops and Threads Cozy Wool instead. It is really beautiful yarn as well and I was really happy with the result when I used it.

Substituting yarn

If you are looking for a yarn that isn’t quite this warm there are many others that will work great. BERNAT SOFTEE CHUNKY for more substitute yarns check out www.yarnsub.com this website is fantastic for finding yarns to use in your projects.

In a pinch two strands of worsted weight yarn held together will also work great. Keep in mind you hood may come out a bit larger so you may want to make a size smaller.

Last are the finishing touches and you are done!

How to make a loop stitch

  1. Wrap the yarn from front to back over the index finger of your yarn hand.
  2. Pull yarn to desired length at this step.
  3. Insert the hook in the next stitch, grab the strand of yarn from behind your index finger, and draw the yarn through the stitch.
  4. The yarn on your finger becomes the loop.
  5. With the yarn loop still on your index finger, yarn over (yo) the hook and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on your hook.
  6. Make sure that all the loops are the same length.

Hi everyone, I'm Cyprianne creator and designer behind Pretty Darn Adorable (previously name Speckled Frog Crochet). I have created this space as a place where I can give back. You all have been such a great support of my business since 2009 I want to have a place where I can share fun crafts, free crochet projects and helpful video tutorials. I hope you enjoy your time here and I would love to hear from you if you have any ideas or questions for me.

Love Cyprianne xo
