I am so excited to finally be adding this Free Crochet Fisherman Hat Pattern to my blog! This beanie has been a favourite of many for the guys in their life and I know mine absolutely love the classic style of this hat too. Rarely do I get requests from the boys, but this is one they enjoy wearing year after year.
This year if I have time I really want to make a pink one for myself!

The main part of classic fisherman style hat is made from the most basic crochet stitch – the single crochet. This beautiful hat is a versatile choice that suits all ages and occasions so I have been sure to include different sizes for everyone from babies, toddlers, children and all the way to adults XL. A size for every head circumference!
Yarn Choices for the Fisherman Beanie
I used worsted weight yarn, for this beanie which I felt was the best choice for a hat that could be worn during transitional months as well as colder ones. I’ve used various yarns for this pattern, including Lion Brand Wool Ease, and We Crochet Brava Tweed which is shown in this blog post.
Remember, different yarn weights can affect the fit, so keep that in mind. The gauge is written for the Brava so if you are using Lion Brand Wool Ease be sure to do a gauge swatch because I found it made a smaller hat.
Can you use a smaller DK Yarn?
Well… Last year I made this with a thinner yarn for my son – I didn’t like it much for some reason it just looked… for lack of a better word… wonky. I increased the number of stitch and went down to a 4.50 mm crochet hook in the hopes that he would have a super stylish hat for college. It didn’t really work for me but bless his heart he wore it everyday.

Fisherman Beanie Construction
The crochet fisherman beanie starts at the top of the hat with the chain 2 method but if course if you prefer to use a magic circle that is great! Then you will be working in continuous increase rounds of single crochet stitches. As the hat grows, the stitch count increases, once you reach your stitch count you can then add extra length to the hat if you wish.
After working the main body of the hat to the desired length, you will switch to the 5.00 mm crochet hook. The ribbed band is crocheted in vertical rows, using slip stitches to attach to the last round of the beanie . This technique ensures that the ribbing is seamlessly attached as you go, giving the brim a clean and polished look without any bulky seams. The process involves alternating rows of half double crochet in the back loop only (hdc blo), which creates a classic ribbed texture.
The final step involves joining the short ends of the ribbed cuff, securing it with a slip stitch. This technique results in a durable, stretchy brim that fits snugly against the head while maintaining its shape and structure.
Note for the perfect ribbed band: Note: If you’re finding that the ribbed band of your crochet project isn’t fitting snugly, you might be working with a looser tension.
Don’t worry—this happens occasionally and an easy adjustment will fix it! To ensure the band hugs the head comfortably, be sure to go down to a 4.00 mm crochet hook size specifically for ribbed section only. This little tweak helps create a snug fit without compromising the overall look of hat.
Customizing Your Beanie
Make this beanie truly your own by adding personal touches that showcase your style. Play with stripes in the main part of the hat. Alternate between two or three colours of worsted weight yarn to match the seasons, holidays or sports teams. Or just add a contrast colour band.
For an extra touch of flair, consider attaching a yarn pom-pom or a faux fur pom-pom to the top of your beanie. Yarn pom-poms have a more textured, cozy feel, while faux fur pom-poms can add a touch of elegance and playfulness.
