Free Crochet Baby Newsboy Cap Pattern – Tiny Textures

September 28, 2020      3 Comments

Last Updated on January 25, 2022 by Cyprianne Nolan

The perfect time to make this adorable crochet baby newsboy cap for your baby is now! The hot summer days are almost gone and the leaves are just starting to turn colour. It is always this time of year my desire to crochet kicks into high gear. That, and my desire for anything pumpkin spice!

A special thank you to Shannon Banal Photography for the adorable photos.

baby crochet newsboy cap made from cotton yarn This fall, I am so excited to be adding the Tiny Textures Crochet Baby Newsboy Cap to my blog. THE YARN

I have mostly made the Tiny Textures Crochet Baby Newsboy Cap out of worsted weight acrylic yarn.  That being said it also works up great in cotton or a cotton blend.  For the cooler months I recommend Lion’s Brand Wool Ease  is a 80% Acrylic, 20% Wool blend.  If you cannot find the colours you want there, or looking for something which will be really comfy on newborn skin Bernat Satin is very soft for new babies and looks beautiful in this design. Both yarns are washing machine and dryer safe.

Want to use your own yarn?  Check out www.yarnsub.com to see if it is a good substitution.

How to Crochet a Newsboy Baby Cap in Four Easy Steps

Crochet the base of the hat.

The base of the hat is made just like a regular crochet beanie.  Crochet baby newsboy caps are usually a little bit shorter than a regular crochet hat so that the brim doesn’t sit too low on the forehead.

Crochet the brim.

The brim will be worked in rows on this pattern.  There will be a decrease with each row giving it a nice curve at both ends of the brim.

Crochet the band.

The crochet band is optional but I think adds a little more style.  Dress it up with contrast or seasonal colours.

Add button

Buttons are cute especially the seasonal ones.  However, they are a choking hazard for older babies who could tear them off and put in their mouth.

COTTON CROCHET NEWSBOY CAP

What size is a crochet baby hat?

If possible it is always recommended to measure your babies head. Once you get the measurement, make sure to crochet the, newsboy cap the same or a little bigger than measured. Babies grow so quickly, you will want the hat to fit comfortably for at least a few months. If it is a gift or you cannot measure, I recommend going up a size.  It is sure to fit before you know it! If it is too small there is little that can be done to make it fit. Use the sizing chart below to help determine the size you need.  If your measurement falls between the pattern sizes always crochet the larger size or go up a hook size which will also allow for a little wiggle room. hat sizing chart

How to measure for a baby crochet hat?

Use something flexible like a soft tape measure or piece of yarn and wrap around the head.  Then measure against a ruler, tape measure or measuring stick.

Wrap around and measure the widest part of the head.  The measuring tape or yarn should be snug but not tight when measuring.

Remember when you are making a hat for a newborn you do not want it to be tight.  Crochet the hat the same size as the head measures or slightly larger.

Special Notes

This hat is worked in rounds.  You will be joining and turning at the end of each round.

Colour Instructions

If you would like to use multiple colours as shown in photo, make colour change just before changing to the 5.00 mm hook for final round(s) and brim.
