Winter isn’t over yet, but even if it were, sometimes having a project that takes a while can be nice to have for when you just feel like crocheting. The Country Charm Free Chunky Crochet Blanket Pattern, made from super bulky yarn, is this pattern and is available for free here on my blog.
I am so excited about this chunky blanket pattern — mostly because I believe that it is a great project for a crocheter of any level, even beginner crocheters, can have success with this pattern.
If you know how to make basic crochet stitches, specifically single crochet and double crochet stitches, then I definitely recommend giving this pattern a try.

With its simple crochet stitches and video tutorial, it is perfect for any skill level. And because of it’s simple design you can easily change the sizing of this pattern for a variety of different sizes. More on that below.

The Yarn
One thing that is ALWAYS important to me is the time it takes to crochet pretty much any project, but especially crochet blankets. This is why I have chosen to use a large crochet hook along with Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick N Quick with Lion Brand Re-Spun yarn.
This super chunky yarn makes a beautiful blanket and comes in pretty, muted tones, which I always seem to gravitate towards. Which is kind of strange considering I love bright colours.
Kind of how I think that pink and purple are my favourite colours — but yet if you look at my home, I have teal and aqua in pretty much every room! Could it be the Gemini in me?
If you are wondering about Bernat Blanket Yarn (I have another great free crochet blanket pattern for this yarn), because I know that it is a super popular choice for chunky crocheted blankets — yes, it can be used. HOWEVER, the stitch is somewhat hidden in the fuzziness of this yarn.
So if you have some Bernat Blanket Yarn on hand that you are looking to use up, I would just make a swatch and see how you like it. You might also want to go up a hook size because Bernat Blanket yarn is a little thicker than Lion Brand Re-Spun, even though they are both considered Super Bulky Yarn.
By testing different hook sizes it will help determine the best yarn for you, the look and feel you are aiming for.
This crochet blanket pattern does use quite a bit of super bulky weight yarn, which is why I was drawn to Lion Brand Yarns Re-Spun Thick & Quick. It was a little cheaper than the Lion Brand Wool- Ease Thick ‘N’ Quick and let’s face it, yarn is not cheap!
If you are looking to make a handmade blanket that is a different size and perhaps from worsted weight yarn and not with a thick yarn, this is an easy pattern to substitute a different yarn weight.
You will want to check out the resources below to help you figure out the easy way to determine the foundation chain you will need depending on the weight of yarn you choose.

One last important note about resizing this crochet blanket pattern is that you will need to keep your starting chain as a multiple of 3 + 2.
Substituting yarn? Match your yarn gauge!
Yarn Gauge refers to the number of stitches and rows that you achieve in a specified measurement, typically a 4-inch by 4-inch (10 cm by 10 cm) square.
While it’s true that crochet blanket patterns are quite forgiving when it comes to gauge, as it’s not crucial for fit like in garments, you might still want to check your gauge.
Here’s why:
Matching Size: Even though exact gauge isn’t essential for this blanket, if you want your final project to be a specific size you will want to check your yarn gauge to ensure that it will be close to your desired dimensions.
Yarn Substitution: If you’re using a different yarn than the one specified in the pattern, checking your yarn gauge (the little chart on the back of the skein) can help ensure that your substitution will still result in a throw of the intended size.
Different yarns can have variations in thickness, so checking gauge is a way to adjust for these differences.
If the gauge of the substitute yarn is significantly different from the original yarn, the project’s feel and look may be affected.
To ensure that the finished project looks and feels as close to the original design as possible, make a swatch with the substitute yarn and compare it to the original yarn swatch to match the gauge.

Construction of the Country Charm Crochet Blanket
You will start with a foundation chain of 3 + 2. Followed by 1 row of single crochet. The rest of the blanket will have a single repeat row of double crochet clusters.
If once you finish the main part of the blanket you love it as is, you can stop! Add pompoms or fringe, or leave it à la carte. Or add the beautiful ruffly border like in the photos.
The Crochet Blanket Border
The contrast border on this blanket was quite the topic of conversation in my house. After pulling it all together I started to second guess just how ruffly it was. I wanted it to be ruffled for sure but thought perhaps it was a little over the top ruffled.
My husband loved it, my mom loved it, my son loved it – and I would learn to love it. Mostly because I didn’t want to rip it all out and redo it!
Adding the extra rounds of the original colour of the blanket also helped to reduce how ruffly it was. I also wanted this blanket to stand out more and as different from the Cedar Ridge Crochet Throw. From a distance they just looked a little too similar.
Now if you want to change the border that is really easy. I have worked 2 single crochet into the end of each row and into each stitch around the blanket.
If you want it a little less ruffled just work a combination of 1 single crochet then 2 single crochet around. This will result in a softer ruffle.

Special Crochet Stitches:

Crochet Blanket Instructions
When working ldc be sure to bring the height of the stitch up to match the height of the dc previously made in the space between the clusters.
Turning chain does not count as stitch.
Ch 77
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from the hook and each ch across (76). Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: 3 dc in 1st sc, sk next 2 sc *3dc in next sc, sk next 2 sc* rpt from * to * to last 3 sc. Hdc in last st. Ch 1, turn. (76)
Note for row 3: Long double crochet stitches being worked under spaces for row 3 are worked into the sc of row 1.
Row 3: Working in space before 1st cluster, (dc, ldc in 1st sc below space, dc). *Sk next cluster, in space before next cluster (dc, ldc in 1st sc below space, dc).* Repeat from * to * to last 3 sts. Skip next 2 sts, hdc in last st. Ch1, turn. (76)
Rows 4 – 42: Working in space before 1st cluster, (dc, ldc in middle st of cluster below, dc). *Sk next cluster, in space before next cluster (dc, ldc in 2nd st of cluster below, dc).* Repeat from * to * to last 3 sts. Skip next 2 sts, hdc in last st. Ch 1, turn. (76)
You will no longer be working into the spaces. Work directly into stitches as instructed below.

Crochet Blanket Border
Join the contrast colour yarn with a slst. Ch 1 (counts as a stitch.)
Rnd 1: Place 3 sc in same stitch as join. Working down the side of the blanket work 2 sc in the end of each row. Place 4 single crochets in corner stitch and turn your work so you are now working along the bottom of the blanket.
Work 2 sc in each stitch across the bottom edge of the blanket. Place 4 single crochets in each corner stitch and turn your work so you are now working along the other side of the blanket.
Working in the other side of the blanket place 2 sc in the end of each row. Place 4 single crochets in the corner stitch and continue to work 2 single crochet in each stitch along the top of the blanket.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, skip next st, slst in next st. *Ch 3, sk next st, slst in next st* rpt from * to * around the entire blanket. Join with slst to 1st ch 3 space. Turn.
Rnds 3-6: Ch 3, slst into next ch 3 space. *Ch 3, slst into next ch 3 space* Repeat from * to * around entire blanket. Join to 1st ch 3 space with slst. Turn.
Change to main colour here
Rnds 7-8: Repeat rnds 3 and 4 above.
Rnd 9: Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in 1st ch 3 space. *(sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 3 space*. Repeat from * to * around entire blanket.
Join to beginning stitch with slst, fasten off and weave in ends.
