When winter comes, we all want something super cosy to bundle up with in the cold weather. This easy crochet cowl made with soft chunky bulky weight yarn is just the neck warmer you have been longing for.
With its simple design, and using only basic crochet stitches (half double crochet and slip stitches) you will have a crochet accessory that is not too heavy, but is still cozy, plush and just the right thickness.
When starting this cowl I thought super bulky yarn would do the trick but I couldn’t find one that had the feel and texture I was looking for. But, I did have a skein of Homespun Lion Brand Yarn that was calling to be made into a simple cowl. I chose a big hook!
I am talking a 19 mm big hook! YUP NO JOKE! At the time we were heading into the holidays and I was looking for something that was simple – would make a great quick gift and I also wanted to explore some of the variegated yarn I had been seeing on social media.
So this simple but fancy chunky crochet cowl pattern was brought to life.
As I worked on this cowl, I realize that one skein of yarn was going to be plenty, which was perfect because I only had one left beautiful purply blue soft yarn at that time – and I was already in love. The stitch I was using was the crunch stitch.
I have used it in many crochet projects because it looks great even though it uses only basic stitches. This simple chunky crochet cowl is no exception.
Worked in rounds it all starts with a long foundation chain which is joined to make a large circle and then followed by a round of single crochet before the texture begins.

How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Chunky Cowl?
The best part about this crochet pattern is it works up super fast – within one hour! Using an extremely oversized 19 mm crochet hook, one repeat round and two strands of chunky yarn held together (this will make any yarn a quick yarn to work with). It means that you can put on your favourite show and have it done before the first episode (60 minute episode) is finished!
Depending on what size you are making and how fast you are as a crocheter it can even be made within a half hour.
How to Adjust the Size of this Chunky Cowl
This cowl is designed as a loose fit – if you would like a snugger fit that is a little less fashion and a lot more warmth simply reduce the foundation chain to a size that is perfect for your personal use. Be sure to keep your starting chain a multiple of 2.
And of course if you want it larger simply add to your starting chain and still keep it a multiple of 2.

Best yarn for the Mountain Hill Chunky Cowl
This crochet cowl looks best when using a soft plush chunky weight yarn. It was designed using both Lion Brand Homespun yarn and Loops and Threads Charisma. Both these yarns have a soft texture to them which results in a soft plush fabric when done.
Substituting yarn
When substituting yarns for a crochet pattern, it’s crucial to keep the gauge as close as possible to the original yarn. Gauge refers to the number of stitches and rows in a given area of the crochet fabric, and it affects the size and shape of the finished project.

Notes about yarn:
This cowl looks best when using a thicker chunky yarn that has a bit of texture to it.

For the best texture, ensure that each time you turn your work, you are working your hdc into the previous round’s slst and all your slst’s into the previous round’s hdc.
