By making the Huntsman Crochet Coffee Cozy Pattern you will ensure that you never burn your hand on a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate again!

Doesn’t this sound perfect for little ones as well? And, not so little ones! My son Christian always has a cozy in his pocket secretly I think in the hopes that he will need it for a drive by hot chocolate 😉

A little birdie (my hubby) also told me that it keeps your drink warmer as well! I have heard them called mug warmers – perhaps I should do a test! Should I?

One of my favourite things about the Huntsman crochet cup sleeve is that it actually looks knit!

Now, I can knit no problem I’m actually pretty good at it. Well… until I need to fix it – then I am at a total loss and heading over to moms – the master knitter to have her help me fix.

So… well the question becomes does that actually make me a bad knitter? Hmmm…. yes a good knitter just not a good fixer!

How do you crochet a coffee sleeve or mug warmer?

There are a few different styles of coffee sleeves. This one is great for travel mugs or take aways. But, it can also be adapted for mugs with handles by adding some loops and buttons. So if you want one for both – give it a go!

  1. Our starting chain will be the height of the sleeve. So this is where you will want to add or deduct stitches for a taller or shorter sleeve.
  2. Then we will be working rows until the desired length of the cozy is made. The length being what will go around the cup.
  3. The second last step will be sewing the shortest ends together to form the tube. It is also at this step you can add buttons and loops so it can be used with a mug with a handle.
  4. The last step is adding a round of slip stitches on the top of the cozy. For a nice pretty clean finish. (This step is totally optional – leave it out if you love the natural scallop looking edge)

That’s just one way of making a cup cozy / coffee sleeve, scroll to the bottom of the post for a few more easy crochet cup cozy patterns.

Substituting Yarn

This pattern was written using worsted weight yarn. The beautiful thing about this design though is that it works up perfectly in pretty much any yarn.

If you go larger than bulky yarn or any smaller than worsted weight yarn the size will change. So in that case I recommend crocheting your starting chain until it is 4 inches tall and adding rows till it is approximately 9 inches long.

REMEMBER – You will need to change your hook size accordingly. Check on the wrapper of yarn for recommendation.

Easy Ways to Customize Your Crochet Coffee Cozy

Once you’ve made one Huntsman coffee cozy, it’s really easy to tweak it to suit different cups, styles, or gift ideas. None of these changes require altering the stitch pattern itself.

Add buttons and loops
If you want to use this cozy on a mug with a handle, add a small loop to one short edge before seaming, then sew a button onto the opposite side. This lets the cozy wrap neatly around the handle instead of sliding on from the top.

Use appliqués or initials
A small crochet heart, flower, or even a stitched initial can be sewn onto the finished cozy. This is a great way to personalize gifts or use up tiny yarn scraps.

Change up the yarn
This pattern works beautifully with solid, heathered, or lightly textured yarns. Tweed or marled yarns add interest while still keeping that knit-like look.

Play with colour
Try colour blocking by switching yarns halfway through the rows, or make a set using the same pattern in different colours. The stitch texture really stands out with simple colour changes.

Skip or swap the edging
The slip stitch edging at the top is optional. Leave it off for a softer, relaxed edge, or replace it with a round of single crochet if you want a slightly firmer finish.

Craft fair bundles
If you sell finished items, these look great grouped together in coordinating colours or button styles.

Just-because gifts
They’re one of those useful items people don’t usually buy for themselves, which makes them especially nice to give.

Crochet Coffee Cozy FAQ

What size cup does this coffee cozy fit?
This crochet coffee cozy fits standard takeaway cups and most travel mugs. You can adjust the fit easily by changing the starting chain height or adding rows for length.

Is this a good pattern for beginners?
Yes. This is a beginner-friendly crochet pattern using basic stitches. As long as you’re comfortable with chaining, half double crochet, and working in the front loop only, you’ll be able to make this cozy.

Do I need to worry about gauge?
No gauge is required. The fit is forgiving, and measuring the cozy as you go is more important than exact stitch counts.

Can I use bulky or super bulky yarn instead of worsted weight?
Yes. If you change yarn weight, adjust your starting chain so it measures about 4 inches tall, then work rows until the cozy reaches approximately 9 inches long. Be sure to use a hook size recommended for your yarn.

Is this coffee cozy washable?
That depends on the yarn you choose. Most worsted weight acrylic or cotton yarns are machine washable, but always check the yarn label for care instructions.

Can I sell finished coffee cozies made from this pattern?
Yes, you’re welcome to sell finished items made from this pattern. Please credit Pretty Darn Adorable as the designer when possible.
