This crochet beanie for children is perfect for a quick every day hat and looks even cuter with this crochet heart on it. This crochet hat will fit most children 3 – 10 years old. If you need one a little bigger or are looking to make one for an adult you can check out this CROCHET BEANIE PATTERN FOR ADULTS pattern then come back for the crochet heart and banner.
If you need a little extra support I do have a video for the adult size – the beginning rounds are all the same. Simply follow the counts on this pattern and stop at round 9 and continue below.

PRO TIP! If you are just starting to crochet – take a moment and watch the video all the way through. Rewind and watch over any parts you my struggle with before even picking up the hook.

Crochet Heart Pattern
Tips for beginner crocheters! Watch this video all the way through a few times so that you know what to expect. The heart in the video is made from worsted weight yarn but can be made from any yarn adjusting your hook size accordingly. Note that changing yarn and hook size will also change the size of the heart.
Notes: This heart will be worked in rounds. The beginning round will be worked across the top of the beginning chain and then around the bottom – creating your 1st round.
Use stitch markers to mark the beginning of each round. This is a must for beginners!
NOTE: Stitches in brackets eg (sc, ch 2, sc) are all worked in one stitch.
MATERIALS
Stitch Marker
I used worsted weight yarn – but this design will work great with any size yarn as long as you use the correct hook size for the weight of the yarn.

YOUR CHOICE OF HOOK
Using 4.00 mm hook heart will measure 4″ across widest part
Using 5.00 mm hook heart will measure 4 1/2″ across widest part
Using 6.00 mm hook heart will measure 5″ across widest part
Using hook of your choice:
Ch 15 Be sure to keep stitches loose otherwise it will be difficult to work round 1.
Rnd 1
3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 5 ch, skip next 2 ch (place stitch marker to mark ch 2 space), sc in next 5 ch, 3 sc in last ch.
Turn work so that you are now working in the bottom loops of beginning chain.
Sc in 1st 5 sts, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch 2 space, sc in last 5 sts. (30)
Rnd 2
You will now be at the very first stitch of round 1 as indicated by your stitch marker.

Sc in next 14 sts, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch 2 space. Sc in last 9 sts. (53)
FAIL PROOF APPLIQUÉ ATTACHMENT
Once your appliqué is ready to attach you will want to try it out in different areas on your hat and pick your favourite spot.
Then BEFORE sewing on I highly recommend using some Liquid Stitch or Speed Sew to secure your appliqué or crochet heart in the best position.
This is my number one tip for anything being sewn to a crochet or knit project. You will need to leave it to dry for an hour or so but it is totally worth it! There is nothing worse than stitching on your appliqué only to find that it has slid out of position.
Once the appliqué or heart is secure you can sew around the outside for extra security and a beautiful finishing touch.

CROCHET HEART BANNER
The crochet banner will be worked making short rows that will make up the length of the banner.
Using 5.0 mm hook and worsted weight yarn Ch 4
Row 1: Sc in 1st and next 2 chain stitches. Ch 1 turn.
Rows 2 – 14 (or until you reach desired length): Sc in 1st and next 2 sts. Ch 1 turn.
Do not fasten off continue below with the pointed ends of crochet banner.
Make pointed ends of banner
Ch 4. Work the stitches below down the chain towards the banner.
- Slst in 2nd ch from hook
- Sc in 3rd ch from hook
- Hdc in 4th ch from hook
Place slst in second and third stitch of last row of banner.
Ch 4
Working down the backside of chain
- Slst in 2nd ch from hook
- Sc in 3rd ch from hook
- Hdc in 4th ch from hook
Once you reach the bottom of the chain slip stitch in the middle sc of last row. Fasten off
At opposite end of banner join yarn with slst.
