Crafted from worsted weight yarn, this coffee cozy is ideal for your hot drinks and a great way to utilize medium weight yarn.

The coffee cup sleeves shown here are made from Lion Brand Wool Ease Acrylic yarn. I tailored them to fit large (19 oz) and extra-large (22 oz cup) paper coffee cups.

Depending on how you take your coffee, sometimes your hands may need a little protection from the heat, and this crochet coffee sleeve is perfect for that.

Say goodbye to double cupping! And, whether they truly keep your coffee warmer longer or not, (check out this experiment I did last year to see if crochet cup cozies really do work!) they feel great and look super cute on your coffee cups.

I even think they’d look adorable on a reusable coffee cup too! Think team colors or favorite colors – using custom colors is a fantastic way to personalize these and make them great gifts for loved ones.

THE YARN

I made these cozies with Lion’s Brand Wool Ease  is a 80% Acrylic, 20% Wool blend.  If you cannot find the colours you want there, any worsted weight would work great.

Cotton would be a great substitute if you wanted to make for cold drinks on hot days the cotton will absorb that moisture which is a nice feature.

Want to use your own yarn?  Check out www.yarnsub.com to see if it is a good substitution.

Montero Crochet Cup Cozy Pattern

This cozy sleeve is worked bottom up.  If you want to change the size for perhaps a larger cup simply add more stitches to your starting chain.  The number of chains should be a multiple of 2 + 1.

Abbreviations

ch – chain

dc – double crochet

sc – single crochet

st – stitch

sts – stitches

slst – slip stitch

rpt – repeat

Gauge

16 sts x 4 rows = 4 inch across (10 cm) in Single Crochet

= 4 inch (10 cm) in Single Crochet

A gauge swatch is vital for correct sizing. It determines stitch tension and measures the number of stitches and rows. Comparing it to the pattern’s gauge ensures the final sizes is as desired. Adjust hook or tension if needed for a perfectly sizing.

To do a crochet gauge swatch using a single crochet stitch, start by using the same type of yarn and crochet hook that you plan to use for your project. Begin crocheting a square approximately 4” x 4” using the single crochet stitch, making sure to maintain an even tension throughout. Once your swatch is complete, measure it using a ruler or measuring tape to determine the number of stitches and rows per inch.

Even though this project is made using a different stitch, this gauge swatch will give you an idea of how your tension will affect the overall size of your finished product.

  1. I really enjoyed this pattern. It came out very pretty. Thank you for sharing with us. I used a pinkish brown cotton yarn and size 4.5 mm crochet hook. Im not sure how to upload a photo.

  2. Hi Courtney – you just need to slip stitch after each section of the cozy is complete :). This is mostly so that the correct sides of the stitches all show up on the same side. Hope this helps.

  3. Hi,
I am making the Montero Crochet Cup Cozy and have a question about the pattern. In rows 1-3 it only says to slip stitch after round 3. Are the 3 rounds continuous and you just slip stitch and turn after 3 rounds are is each round joined and turned?

    Thanks,
    Courtney
