I love cup cozies, and while I absolutely think they make a fantastic last-minute gift, this one is extra special for the holiday season! 🎄 Playing with colour and stripes is always fun, but let’s be honest—colour changes, small crochet hooks, and tiny yarn can really slow things down. That’s why I’m so excited to share a truly quick gift idea with you: this stunning Santa’s Belly Crochet Cup Cozy! 🎅

This coffee cozy is a step above your usual patterns, thanks to the elegant details and easy design:

✔️ Faux fur trim for that fluffy Santa suit look
✔️ A sleek grosgrain ribbon to complete the belt
✔️ A sparkling rhinestone buckle for the perfect festive touch

Quick and easy to make too!

✔️ Skill Level – Beginner

✔️ Worked in continuous rounds

✔️ Super bulk yarn

It’s not just quick—it’s classy, making it perfect for the holiday season and wonderful gifts. The cozy itself uses super bulky yarn (I recommend something soft and plush in a rich red yarn) with a simple base of single crochet stitches. The finishing touches like the ribbon and buckle are added with minimal effort.  This adorable cozy pattern would put even the grinch in the Christmas mood.

This project is a great way to use up any extra festive supplies you have, and the faux fur trim can be made from yarn or by attaching faux fur fabric with a bit of hot glue – this adds a fun, whimsical element that makes this cozy really pop. It’s perfect for pairing with Christmas cups, a coffee cup and gift card, or even a mug filled with candy canes or hot cocoa mix for a complete gift set.

What You’ll Need

  • Yarn: Super bulky red yarn for the base and white yarn for the trim
  • Ribbon: Black grosgrain ribbon (cut to size for the belt)
  • Buckle: A sparkly rhinestone buckle (or any decorative buckle you like)
  • Faux fur trim: Yarn or fabric – Soft and fluffy, easily attached with hot glue
  • Tools: A 8 mm crochet hook, scissors, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends

How to Customize

The Santa’s Belly Crochet Cup Cozy can easily be tailored to your style:

  • Swap the rhinestone buckle for a wooden button for a rustic vibe.
  • Try using different yarn weights adjusting hook size and number of chains as needed.

Instructions for Crochet Cup Cozy

Foundation Chain: Ch 25, join with a sl st to form a circle. Ch 1 (this does not count as a stitch).

Rnd 1: Work 1 sc in the same st as the sl st and in each ch around. (25)

Rnds 2-6: Sc in each st around. (25)

After Round 6, join with a sl st to the next st and fasten off. Weave in ends.

Faux Fur Trim

Tip: Faux fur yarn can make it tricky to see the stitches. Work in a well-lit area and use your fingers to feel for the stitches if needed.

I like to turn cozy inside out and crochet the faux fur with the outside of the cozy facing me.  I find this makes the faux fur trim just a little thicker when you do this.

  1. Find the centre back seam and join the Faux Fur yarn with a sl st.
  2. Work 1 hdc in the same st as the sl st and in each st around. Fasten off and weave in ends.
  3. Repeat Steps 1-2 on the opposite edge of the cozy.

Buckle and Belt

Tip: Measure the ribbon on the finished cozy before cutting to ensure it fits snugly but isn’t too tight.

  1. Loop the ribbon through the buckle and glue it in place to secure.
  2. Wrap the ribbon around the cozy and weave it through the buckle to secure in place.  If you find the buckle is heavy and making the band slip off secure the buckle in place with a hot glue behind the buckle.
  3. Trim the ribbon to the desired length.

This mug hug is not just a fun project—it’s also a thoughtful gift for family members, teacher gifts, or anyone who loves hot drinks. Be sure to follow my blog for more free crochet patterns and latest updates, and share your creations on my Facebook page or other social media platforms.
