This beginner super bulky crochet beanie pattern is one of those projects I come back to every year. It’s quick, it’s simple, and it’s the kind of hat you can finish in one sitting and immediately want to make again.
I usually end up making these when it’s far too warm outside to be crocheting winter hats. But that’s just how it goes. You make them early, stash them away, and then when fall shows up you’re suddenly prepared with cozy gifts, craft fair stock, or a last-minute hat someone definitely needs.
If you’ve been here before, you’ll notice this post has had a bit of a refresh. I’ve added clearer beginner notes, improved sizing info, and I’m now including yarn requirements for each size so you can grab exactly what you need. The pattern itself hasn’t changed. It’s still made entirely in single crochet, worked in continuous rounds, and written for sizes from newborn to adult XL.

Video Tutorial
I’ve created a full video tutorial for this beanie using the adult size.
If you’re making a smaller size, you can still follow along with the video. Just crochet until you reach the final stitch count for your size, then switch back to the written pattern to finish your rounds.
Absolute Beginner Tutorial
Why This Beanie Is Beginner Friendly
This pattern is great if you’re newer to crochet or just want something relaxing that doesn’t require a lot of counting or fancy stitches.
- Made entirely with single crochet
- Worked in continuous rounds (no joining)
- Super bulky yarn means it works up fast
- Same construction for every size
- Includes sizes from newborn to adult XL
It’s also a great “confidence builder” project. Once you’ve made one, the rest feel easy.

Sizes Included
This pattern includes six sizes so you can make matching hats for the whole family.
For newborn sizes, aim to match head measurements as closely as possible.
For children and adults, the hat should be about 1 inch smaller than head circumference for a comfortable fit.

Abbreviations
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
st – stitch
sts – stitches
sl st – slip stitch
rpt – repeat
Gauge
8 sts x 11 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in single crochet
Hat length may be adjusted by adding or subtracting rounds as needed.
A gauge swatch is vital for a well-fitting crochet hat. It determines stitch tension and measures the number of stitches and rows. Comparing it to the pattern’s gauge ensures the final hat fits as desired. Adjust hook or tension if needed for a perfectly fitting hat.
Because the texture of this hat can only be worked in rounds the gauge will be based on a swatch of rows made in single crochet.
The number or rows is not needed for this swatch as you will be working the number or rounds based on a measurement and not a round count. But it is recommended to do at least 6 rows for your gauge swatch.

Notes
- This pattern is worked in continuous rounds, which means you do not join at the end of each round.
- Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round and move it up as you go. This makes counting much easier, especially with super bulky yarn.
- You’ll start the hat using a 10 mm hook, then switch to a 9.0 mm hook partway through the pattern. This helps keep the fabric looking neat and consistent.
- Each size follows the same basic steps. The only things that change are the stitch counts and number of rounds.

Optional Finishing Ideas
If you want to dress your beanie up a little, you can add a pompom or buttons once it’s finished. Both are completely optional but can give the hat a more polished, gift-ready look.
You can also make matching sets in different sizes, which works especially well for craft fairs or holiday gifting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this pattern suitable for beginners?
Yes. This pattern uses only single crochet and includes a full video tutorial to help you along.
Do I need to join rounds?
No. The hat is worked in continuous rounds. A stitch marker is your best friend here.
Can I use a different super bulky yarn?
Yes, but yarn thickness can vary. If you substitute yarns, check the fit as you go and compare it to the finished measurements.
Can I sell finished hats made from this pattern?
Yes, finished items may be sold. A credit to Pretty Darn Adorable is always appreciated but not required.
If you make this beanie, I’d love to see it. Tag me or share your version so I can admire your colour choices (because somehow that’s always the hardest part).
