If you’re a crocheter looking for the perfect project for fall, this Free Twisted Crochet Velvet Headband Pattern is a fantastic choice. It’s a cozy ear warmer made with Bernat Velvet Yarn that’s both stylish and simple. Made from a combination of double crochet and chain stitches, this easy crochet headband pattern has a stunning texture, super easy to make and has a modern twisted design!

I have been sure to include different sizes, including adult size and variety of sizes for kids making these a perfect gift for the upcoming holidays, back to school and craft fairs.

I had a bit of a struggle with this design—not due to difficulty or deciding what is the best crochet stitch for a headband, but because I was torn about the yarn choice. The allure of the velvet yarn and its cozy, warm softness was tempting. However, I felt the beautiful stitch wasn’t as bold as I wanted. So, I decided to make one using just the simple single crochet stitch, and it looked quite different from my original concept so I went ahead with the fancy stitch as planned.

Velvet Twisted Headband – Free Crochet Pattern

Even for crocheted headbands, basic stitches like the single crochet stitch are an excellent choice for beginners. But, if you’re a beginner familiar with basic stitches, including double crochet, this velvet headband pattern is a wonderful starter project. It’s an easy crochet pattern with a fun stitch that showcases a beautiful texture.

Construction of this Crochet Velvet Headband Pattern

The construction of this Twisted Crochet Velvet Headband Pattern is so simple making it really easy to customize. The headband is worked flat in rows. To start, you’ll crochet a rectangle in your chosen yarn.

Once you’ve crocheted the main piece to the desired length (length is the part that wraps around your head), it’s time to give it that stylish twist. To do this, you’ll fold the short ends of the headband together so that they meet in the middle. (See the Instruction Photos below – as it provides a visual guide for this part of the process.)

The next step involves folding the ends in half and inserting them into each other, ensuring all ends are even and then sewing them together.

The beauty of this pattern lies in its versatility and ease of customization. The headband can be adjusted to fit various sizes by altering the number of chains and rows. Whether you’re making it for a child or an adult, you can easily modify the pattern to ensure a snug fit.

5 Tips for Crocheting with Velvet Yarn

Sometimes crocheting with velvet yarn can be challenging especially for beginners so to make this crochet Twisted Crochet Velvet Headband Pattern easier be sure to review the tips below:

  1. Choose the Right Hook:Velvet yarn is often thicker and has a unique texture, so it’s important to use the hook size recommended in the pattern. Avoid going smaller than the recommended size, as this can make the yarn harder to work with and affect your stitch definition. A hook that matches the pattern’s recommendation helps you achieve the intended gauge and allows the yarn to glide more smoothly, making your project easier and more enjoyable.
  2. Use a Light-Colored Yarn:Lighter shades of velvet yarn make it easier to see the stitches compared to darker colors. Dark velvet yarn can obscure your stitches, making it difficult to track your progress and spot errors. If you’re new to crocheting with velvet, starting with a lighter color will help you practice and perfect your technique without the added challenge of visibility issues.
  3. Work Slowly and Patiently:Velvet yarn can be slippery and challenging to handle, so taking your time with each stitch is important. Rushing can lead to mistakes and frustration. Move at a pace that feels comfortable and allows you to focus on each stitch. If you find yourself struggling, take a break and come back with fresh eyes. This approach will help you produce more consistent and neat results.
  4. Keep Tension Consistent:Consistent tension is key to achieving a smooth and even fabric, especially with velvet yarn, which can be more prone to unevenness. Pay attention to how tightly or loosely you’re holding the yarn and aim for an even hand. Adjust your grip and yarn tension as needed to ensure that your stitches are uniform throughout the project. This will help prevent issues like bunching or uneven rows.
  5. Practice in Small Swatches: Before starting your main project, practice with a small swatch to get used to the feel and handling of velvet yarn.

What is the Difference Between Bernat Velvet and Baby Velvet?

Bernat Velvet and Bernat Baby Velvet Yarn both offer a plush, luxurious feel, but they differ in thickness. Bernat Velvet is a bulky yarn, ideal for projects like this cozy headband, while Bernat Baby Velvet Yarn is lighter and softer worsted weight yarn. For this pattern, Bernat Velvet Yarn provides a perfect balance of warmth and comfort.

However, don’t let this stop you.  If you have worsted weight velvet on hand use it!  You can either double up and use two strands held together or simply adjust the pattern by adding more starting chains to accomodate for the shorter height of the headband using the smaller yarn.  Also be sure to go down a hook size – you want to keep this headband warm and the weave on the tighter side.

What Yarn to Use for Crochet Headbands?

For crochet winter headbands, choose a yarn that’s soft, stretchy, and warm. Bulky yarn like Bernat Velvet Yarn is ideal for quick projects like this cozy headband. As always in these times when yarn has become so incredibly expensive I encourage you to use any skein of yarn you have on hand. Other great choices include worsted weight yarn and Bernat Crushed Velvet. Remember this and other free crochet headband patterns are a great way to use leftover yarn from other projects especially if you are making them for personal use!  Have fun dive into your stash and even combine different yarns together.

Notes

Some tips for making this pattern

  1. For the right size, wrap the headband around your head and adjust as needed.Customize the height by adding or subtracting starting chains in multiples of two.
  2. For the right size, wrap the headband around your head and adjust as needed
  3. Customize the height by adding or subtracting starting chains in multiples of two.
  4. If making for yourself you can get a perfect fit by simply wrapping the headband around your head till the edges of the headband meet and it feels snug around your head.
  5. You want the band snug so that it will fit after any stretching.  If the band is too big – take out one row at a time till you are happy with the length and fit.
  6. The best thing about this crochet headband pattern is that you are working the length of the headband as you go – it couldn’t be easier to customize the size by crocheting less or more rows for smaller or larger heads.
  7. To adjust the height of the headband you can add more or less beginning chains keeping a multiple of two.  Easily sub a worsted weight or super bulky yarn creating a longer chain for worsted weight and a shorter for super bulky.
  8. This headband will be crocheted flat as a rectangle then the it will be seamed at the front to make the beautiful twist.

I always recommend when possible to get the head measurement before making otherwise follow sizing guidelines below.
