The crochet crunch stitch was one of the first stitches I ever designed with. With its easy repeat row of slip stitches and half double crochets, these basic stitches result in a tightly textured fabric perfect for dishcloths.

Now, it is no secret that there are tonnes of patterns out there for crunch stitch washcloths and dishcloths.  But, I have been making these for years and wanted to share my version.

Before I started on this post I did a search and couldn’t find any that were the same so I am hoping you all love this crochet crunchy stitch dishcloth pattern with its pretty contrast border and scalloped edging.

I wanted you to see how beautiful they looked using multiple colours and how the border can really ‘level-up’ the design.  Ugh, I cringe at that expression but it did seem fitting.

Plus we all have – or –  most of us have a yarn stash of bits and bobs that we would love to use up, and this free crochet dishcloth pattern is perfect for stash busting!

As most of you know I love adding contrast borders to my dishcloths and washcloths.  I think adding a border is a great way of giving your dishcloths a beautiful finished look – it also can give you a chance to add in another colour which is always great for personalizing for your kitchen and bath colours or of course just for having fun.

This fabulous texture looks beautiful in both acrylic and cotton yarn, but for dishcloth and washcloth patterns most people prefer to use cotton

The great thing about the intricate looking crunch stitch and using it to crochet dishcloths and washcloths is that you can use pretty much any size crochet hook that works well with your yarn.

If you don’t have the exact size hook this simple pattern calls for that is okay but you will want to keep the hook size close to the size recommended on the yarn label.

The crunch stitch pattern can be made using an odd number or even number of chains but for this pattern I have chosen even. By using an even number of chains each row will start with a half-double crochet and end with a slip stitch at the end of the row.   Simple details like this help to keep this an easy pattern to put on repeat.

Whether you are making a farmhouse, boho or chic crochet washcloth or dishcloth the Brookside Cottage Crunch Dishcloth (or washcloth) makes great gifts for any occasion so be sure to PIN this free pattern so you can find it whenever you need it.

Happy Crocheting!

Notes

  • For striped dishcloth colour changes are made every two rows.
  • Depending on the number of colours used it may be easier to cut at the end of each row rather than carry the yarn.  I used 5 colours so cut each time a colour change was done.
  • To determine the amount of yarn needed for each colour divide 60 grams by total number of colours you are using for the dishcloth (note: this does not include the border.)
  • Each row will start with a hdc and end with a slst.
  • If you want to adjust the size of the dishcloth you will want to increase or decrease the number of stitches for your starting chain.  Just be sure that it is a multiple of 2 + 1.
  • The turning chain at the end of the row does not count as a stitch.

Ch 35

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from the hook, slst in next. *Hdc in next ch, slst in next* repeat from *to* until end of row. (34) Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Hdc in 1st slst, slst into hdc. *Hdc in next slst, slst in next hdc* repeat from *to* until end of row. (34) Ch 1, turn.

Continue to repeat row 2 until length equals width and your dishcloth is square.

To know if it is square fold into a triangle as shown below.
