I always recommend when possible to use a tape measure to measure the head of whom you are making it for. I also think for bucket hats a looser fitting hat makes for a more comfortable hat so you may want to keep that in mind when choosing the size you are going to make.
This easy bucket hat pattern is great for a beginner crocheter with the top of the hat (crown of the hat) is worked in increase rounds using single crochet stitches until you get to the body of the hat then the texture starts which is a simple combination of basic stitches – single crochet, chain stitch and double crochet stitches.

Best yarn for this pattern
I have only made this hat in cotton worsted weight yarn but I do think this simple bucket hat pattern would be really fun make for the cooler months as well. If you make it in the same weight acrylic yarn you could most likely make with no adjustments to the pattern if the yarn gauge is the same.
If you wanted to make in chunky yarn I think that would be easy to adjust. I would try going down a hook size which would create a tighter stitch and then should keep you around the same gauge as the pattern calls for.

Gauge
A gauge swatch is vital for a well-fitting crochet hat. It determines stitch tension and measures the number of stitches and rows. Comparing it to the pattern’s gauge ensures the final hat fits as desired. Adjust hook or tension if needed for a perfectly fitting hat.
To do a crochet gauge swatch using a single crochet stitch, start by using the same type of yarn and crochet hook that you plan to use for your hat. Begin crocheting a square approximately 4” x 4” using the single crochet stitch, making sure to maintain an even tension throughout. Once your swatch is complete, measure it using a ruler or measuring tape to determine the number of stitches and rows per inch.
Even though the hat is made using a different stitch, this gauge swatch will give you an idea of how your tension will affect the overall size of your finished product.

Special Crochet Stitch Instructions
The Primrose Stitch: Provides the beautiful lacy texture of this hat. See portion of instructions on any size where it says “texture starts here” for complete instruction.
Below are a few reference photos so you know you are doing it correctly.
Front Loop Only: Insert your hook into the front loop only of the designated stitch (as opposed to both loops as usual). Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.
Long Reverse Single Crochet – Lrsc
This technique results in a slightly twisted, rounded edge, making it ideal for creating a clean and straightforward finish for your projects.
The reverse single crochet stitch, often referred to as the crab stitch, involves the same steps as a regular single crochet, but in the opposite direction. Typically abbreviated as rsc, this stitch is executed from left to right instead of the usual right to left.
The Long Reverse Single Crochet is worked in the exact same way but is worked into the ROUND BELOW. This gives the stitch a longer look – if you prefer the regular reverse single crochet that will absolutely work too!

Shaping the Rose (click to watch this part in video)
Roll rose into shape very loosely so that rose stays large and flat. Thread tapestry yarn with long tail of yarn.
Starting at the base (underside) of the rose, stitch through the layers of petals.
Use small, discreet stitches to anchor the petals in place. Continue stitching around the entire rose, adjusting the shape as needed.
Once satisfied with the shape, weave in the yarn ends to secure and trim any excess.
LEAF 6.5 mm hook Ch 9 (click to watch this part in video)
Row1: Sc 2nd ch from hook, hdc next 3, dc next 3, 3 hdc in last ch (this will bring to the bottom loops, which will be called row 2)

To attach a crochet rose and leaves to hat, thread a tapestry needle with yarn. Sew leaves to rose then position the rose on the hat and stitch it securely using small, discreet stitches around the base and through the petals. Weave in the yarn ends to secure, ensuring the rose is firmly attached.
