It’s unique texture will have people wondering where you got that hat!
Foxy it up in adult size with faux fur trim or keep it simple and classic using the same yarn for the whole hat. Know matter how you make it is going to be a hit!
Made crocheting top down with basic stitches this hat has a little wiggle room just like traditional aviator hats.

The Yarn
When I designed this hat Bernat Softee Chunky was my go to yarn to use. It was soft and came in beautiful colours.
They have since changed this yarn and it is now a #6 Super Bulky making it far too thick for this design.
Please be aware when choosing a yarn for this crochet aviator hat that you should be looking to purchase a #5 bulky yarn with a recommended hook size no larger than 6.5 mm.
Any bulky yarns suggesting an 8.00 mm hook will be too thick and will result in a hat far too big.
A favourite yarn of mine thought is Patons Shetland Chunky Yarn It comes in lots of beautiful colours great for babies, kids and adults.
And, if you can find it, Lion’s Pride Woolspun is also great. I have made many patterns from my Cumberland series with this yarn. It seems to have disappeared though. I did manage to find a few “from the vault” on amazon here:Lion’s Pride Woolspun
If you know of a great bulky yarn it would be wonderful if you posted in the comments for others. I typically shop at Micheals and find very few bulky yarns that don’t call for 8.00 mm hook.

How to crochet an aviator hat
For this crocheted aviator hat we will be starting at the top of the hat.
Increase rounds for this particular design are worked a little differently to accommodate the beautiful texture.
This is where many make errors. Read the pattern carefully and take your time. The increases are different for each size and depend on the starting number of stitches.
It is REALLY EASY I promise you are going to love crocheting this.
Don’t worry if the start of the hat is very flat and for some sizes even a wee bit rippled this is totally normal and will correct itself as more rounds are added.
Once you finish the increase rounds the hat will start to take on the typical ‘bowl’ shape the more rounds you finish.
Phew that’s a lot of info!
So once the main part of the hat is done you are going to make the Extended Back of the Hat. This is the part that covers the back of your neck – or well the neck of the lucky person wearing this hat 🙂
Once this part is done keep going without cutting the yarn. You will be at the end of the extension and will start working the earflap in rows back and forth.
Once the first earflap is done you will cut the yarn and start working from the opposite end of the extension for the second earflap.

Last step!
The final part of the crochet aviator hat is the brim that will be worked in rows back and forth between the earflaps and will then be folded up and attached to the front of the hat.
Before you attach it though be sure to finish of your hat by doing a round, around the entire hat with a beautiful faux fur or contrasting yarn of your choice.
So that’s the Coles Notes version (dating myself there lol) Who knows what Coles Notes are? Let me know in the comments 🙂
