Why I Chose Cotton Yarn for Crochet Sun Hat Pattern
5 reasons to use cotton yarn for a sun hat
There are many different types of yarns you can use for a crochet sun hat, but I prefer cotton yarn because it is lightweight and comfortable. I have made sun hats from acrylic before and they are great – but not great in the hot months when perspiration is a factor.
Here are five reasons why you should use cotton yarn for your next sun hat:
- Cotton yarn is lightweight, so it won’t weigh down your hat or make it feel too hot or uncomfortable.
- Cotton yarn doesn’t trap heat like other materials can, so it will keep your head cool in summer weather.
- Cotton yarn is breathable, so it will keep your head fresh and free from sweat.
- Cotton is natural and doesn’t contain harmful chemicals.
- Cotton is absorbent, so it can hold up to sweat and water better than acrylic.

How do you crochet a floppy sun hat?
Crocheting a floppy sun hat is one of the easiest and most fun crochet projects you can make.
All you need is 6.5 mm for the base of the hat and 5.5mm crochet hook for the brim and some cotton yarn!
The basic stitches used for this sun hat are chain stitch, single crochet, and double crochet, so if you are new to crochet, this is perfect for you. Watch the video tutorial – I will quickly cover how the stitches are made as I go.
The instructions below will show you how to create a basic floppy sunhat for adult. Once you have mastered the basic stitches, you can try out some of the more advanced techniques for added complexity and flair.
For example, you can use half double crochet stitches to create a deeper brim for extra protection from the sun. You can also personalize your hat by stripping, adding flowers or other embellishments to the hat.

The Lacey Ladies Crochet Sun Hat pattern works up great in a cotton, cotton blend and acrylic yarn beautifully! The yarn I used for this hat was the Bernat Handicrafter cotton but really any cotton or cotten blend will work.
A great choice if you want to crochet for the warmer months. Cotton is excellent as it conducts heat away from the body, keeping baby cool and comfortable!
Another advantages to using cotton is that it doesn’t pill and really shows off this stitch beautifully! If you do decide to use cotton yarn be sure to lay the hat flat after washing! Cotton can get very heavy when wet and you don’t want your beautiful project to lose its shape after washing it.
This sun hat could also be made in acrylic, which is great for fall or cooler spring days. It would work up in Vanna’s Choice or any of the stiffer worsted weight yarns. Acrylic yarn is great for cooler days, it is soft, easy to work with, washes beautifully and rarely will garments lose their colour even upon multiple washings.
With so many acrylic yarns available the colour choices are endless – and remember! This one looks great with contrasting bands and roses!

How to choose a wire for your crochet sun hat
Here are some tips on choosing the right wire for your brim:
– Think about the application of the wire – is it holding up a big brim? Or do you just want a little support? (Think bras on this one ladies.)
– How will the hat be used? Is it worn by a toddler that will bend and throw the hat all over the place but grow out of it quickly? Or will it be worn by a fashionable young lady who will care for it treat it gently.
If you are looking for the best wire for the brim of your sunhat, then you may want to consider using a stiff wire. This type of wire will hold its shape better and will not create any flapping or movement when you are wearing your hat.
Another important factor to consider when choosing a wire for the brim of your sunhat is the gauge. This refers to the thickness of the wire. A thicker gauge will make the brim of your hat more durable, while a thinner gauge may be less sturdy.
Let me know – did this take the mystery out of putting a wire in your hat?
