Perfect Fitting Headband Every Time!

If making for yourself you can get a perfect fit by simply wrapping the headband around your head till the edges of the headband meet and it feels snug around your head.

You want the band snug so that it will fit after any stretching.  If the band is too big – take out one row at a time till you are happy with the length and fit.

Easily Resize

The best thing about this crochet headband pattern is that you are working the length of the headband as you go – it couldn’t be easier to customize the size by crocheting less or more rows for smaller or larger heads.

To adjust the thickness of the headband you can add more or less beginning chains keeping a multiple of two.

photo of lacey purple head with arrows showing the height of the headband. instructions read easily adjust the height of your headband by reducing or increasing your starting chain.

*Headband is crocheted in rows width wise.  Crochet until you reach the desired length to go around head or is 20 to 21 inches in length.

You will want the headband to be quite snug unlike a hat if it stretches too much it will slip down and no longer fit properly.

Substituting Yarn

Because of the way this headband is constructed you can easily sub a worsted weight yarn.

If you want a tight weave go down a hook size to align with the size recommended on the yarn or keep at the 6.5mm hook – the weave will be looser and the headband not quite as warm but still super cozy and comfy.

The yarn I used for the twisted crochet headband here was the original #5 bulky Softee Chunky by Bernat. It has since been discontinued but these would be great substitutes.

Patons Shetland Chunky – Beautiful yarn 75% acrylic and 25% wool wish can be machine washed – lay flat to dry.

Red Heart Hygge – This yarn is incredibly soft – it has a soft texture which would add extra dimension to this crochet headband. It comes in a lot of colours and some multi-tones as well.

Lion Brand Scarfie Yarn – This is a really fun yarn that will add life and colour to your crochet headband. It comes in many colour combinations making it great yarn to choose if you love to snazz things up a bit.

This headband will be crocheted flat as a rectangle then the it will be seamed at the front to make the beautiful twist. I highly recommend watching the video for this part.

Do you have a similar pattern for a hat? I love the twisted part in the front and would like to have the same style in a hat that covers the entire head. I am going through Chemotherapy and would love to have one to cover my baldish head! Thanks!

Hi Donna – so sorry to hear about what you are going through. I don’t have a pattern but what you could do is use your favourite pattern and cinche in the middle.
