Get ready for Christmas with this adorable crochet Christmas hat!
I am hoping that this year I will actually have enough time to make these crochet Christmas hats for the whole family. Seems every year I fall behind and end up pulling out store bought hats at the last minute while I struggle to get the boys in front of the tree long enough to get a picture!
I love this one in the green and red it just screams Christmas! I am thinking this year a red and white striped one would be really cute too!

What yarn should I use for this hat?
One of the things I love most about making hats with earflaps is they are more forgiving. If they are a little big it is no problem – a little wiggle room is just fine.
Which brings me to my next point. This hat works up great in bulky yarn. NOT the thick bulky yarns though. Something like Charisma is too thick and they hat would turn out much too big. So if you want to use a yarn like that I would recommend going down a size. If you go down a hook size the hat will be really stiff.
Try to find a bulky yarn with a recommended hook size no larger than 6.5 mm. Check out www.yarnsub.com this is a great resource for finding substitute yarns.

Is a crochet hat warm?
Honestly not really. I hate to admit this but depending on where you live a crochet hat just may not be warm enough. In Canada where I am, winters can get really really cold!
When the boys were young there were days I would walk them to school and the winds would cut right through my hat and I would literally get brain freeze.
So what is the answer? Line the hats. Lining crochet or knit hats make a world of difference.
If you live in an area that is really cold and lining your hats would make a difference be sure to check out my youtube video tutorial HOW TO LINE A HAT WITH EARFLAPS
