This crochet baby blanket and matching cow hat is a must for newborn photos.  Attention all new mommies and photographers!  Are you looking for something unique and adorable for your newborn baby photos.  

FREE CROCHET BABY BLANKET AND HAT PATTERN

This set is a photographers dream transition them so easily from one pose to another. Keep a sleeping baby sleeping warm and cozy without a fuss.

Start with the blanket and slowly work to their bare little bums if you please:)

Add little bows or flowers to personalize this hat for a girl – or crochet by itself for a little guy. This makes a great photo prop – or an adorable everyday hat that will definitely make heads turn.

Using 6.5mm hook and #5 Bulky Yarn

4” x 4” = 12sc x 6 rows

Materials Needed

  • 5.5 mm hook (For ears and tail)
  • 6.5 mm hook (For hat)
  • 8.0 mm hook (For blanket)
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Stitch Markers
  • 100 g – 4 Worsted Weight for mouth, bow and eye patches
  • 300 g – 5 Bulky yarn 
  • Small amount of fun fur for hair and end of tail
  • Small amount of fibrefill for mouth
  • 2 buttons for eyes

Finished Measurements

Newborn to 6 Months Hat – 16” x 5”

Blanket 11” x 17”

sc2tog

Insert hook into specified stitch draw up loop, insert hook into next stitch draw up loop, yarn over hook and draw through all 3 loops.  

hdc2tog

Yarn over hook, insert hook into specified stitch, draw up loop, insert hook into next stitch draw up loop, yarn over hook and raw through all 4 hoops.  Hdc2tog made.

CROCHET COW HAT PATTERN FOR BABY

Using 6.5 mm hook and bulky yarn

Ch 2 

Rnd 1: Work 8 hdc in 2nd st from hook (8)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in 1st and each st around, join with sl st, ch 1 turn (16)

Rnd 3: Sk 1st st, (sc, dc) in next st *sk next st (sc, dc) in next st* rpt from *to* end of rnd, join with sl st, ch 1 turn (16)

Rnd 4: 2 sc in 1st st and each st around (32), join with sl st, ch 1 turn

Rnd 5: Sk 1st st, (sc, dc) in next st *sk next st (sc, dc) in next st* rpt from *to* end of rnd, join with sl st, ch 1 turn (32)

Rnd 6: Sc in first 3 sts *2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts* rpt from *to* till end of rnd (40) join with sl st, ch 1 turn

Rnds 7: Sk 1st st, (sc, dc) in next st *sk next st (sc, dc) in next st* rpt from *to* end of rnd, join with sl st, ch 1 turn (40)

From this point forward be sure to work (sc,dc) in dc

Rnds 8-14: Sk 1st st, (sc, dc) in next dc *sk next st (sc, dc) in next dc* rpt from *to* end of rnd, join with sl st, ch 1 turn (40)

After last round, fasten off and weave in ends.

Join yarn at fasten off point at back of hat.  Working left to right rsc in each st around.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

COWL EARS Make 2 

Using 6.5 mm hook

Ch 8

Row 1: Hdc in 1st ch from hook and each st across, ch 1 turn (7)

Rows 2 – 7: 1 hdc in next st and each st across, ch 1 turn (7)

Row 8: Hdc2tog, hdc2tog, hdc, hdc2tog, ch 1 turn (4)

Row 9: Hdc in 1st and each st across (4)

Work sc around entire ear fasten off and weave in ends

Inner Part of Ear Make 2

Using 6.5 mm hook

Ch 7

Row 1: Hdc in 1st ch from hook and next 5 sts, 5dc in last st, working down other side hdc in next 5 sts, join with sl st and fasten off and weave in ends.

Place inner ear in outer and stitch together.  Bring top two corners of top of ear together and stitch.  Stitch ears to hat using photo as guide.

MOUTH

Using 5.50mm hook

Ch 15

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch and each ch across, ch 1 turn (14)

Row 2: Skip 1st st, sc across, skip 2nd last st, sc in last, ch 1 turn (12)

Row 3: Skip 1st st, sc across, skip 2nd last st, sc in last, ch 1 turn (10)

Row 4: Skip 1st st, sc across, skip 2nd last st, sc in last (8)

Continuing, working sc around entire snout, join with slst and leave long tail about 18” for sewing to hat.

Sew on small buttons for nostrils or make small “x” stitches with tapestry need and yarn.

Attach mouth sewing ¾ of the way around leaving a small opening for batting.  Fill with fibrefill and continue to sew shut.

HORNS  (Make 2)

Using 6.5 mm hook 

Ch 3

Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in 1st chain (8)

Rnds 2-4: Sc in 1st and each st around (8)

Join with slip stitch and fasten off leaving long tail for attaching.

Using tapestry needle and yarn attach horns to hat using photo as guide.

EYE PATCHES (1 or 2)

Using 5.5 mm hook 

Ch 5 

Work 1 hdc in 1st ch and each ch across, 5hdc in last ch, working under chain hdc to end and fasten off. 

Using photo as guide sew to hat and add buttons.

BOW

Using 5.5 mm hook and worsted weight yarn

Ch 16 join with slip stitch to form circle.

Rnds 1-4: Work sc in 1st and each stitch around.  

Without fastening off lay bow flat and wrap yarn around middle to form bow.  Use tapestry need to attach to hat.

Using 8.00 mm hook and bulky yarn

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd and each st across, ch 1 turn (16) (This is the top end of the blanket)

Row 2: Hdc in 1st st, (sc, dc) in next, *skip next st, (sc, dc) in next* rpt from *to* across, hdc in last st, ch 1 turn (16)

Row 3: Hdc in 1st st, 2 hdc in next, *(sc, dc) in next, skip next st* rpt from *to* across to last three sts.  (sc, dc) in third from end, (hdc, hdc) in next to last st, hdc in last ch 1 turn (18)

Work hdc around entire blanket, (do not work extra sts in corners) fasten off and weave in ends.

TAIL

Using 6.50 mm hook

Ch 3

Rnd 1: 8 sc into 1st ch (8)

Rnds 2-19: Sc in 1st and each st around (8)

Fasten off leaving long tail for attaching.

Sew tail to blanket using photo as guide.

END OF TAIL (worked like a fringe)

Using fun fur cut approximately 20 pieces of yarn 10 inches long.

Fold yarn pieces in half, use hook to draw the folded ends around the stitch pulling from right side under stitch back up through to right side again.

Pull the loose ends through the folded section and draw the knot up firmly.  Work your way up from the bottom of the tail until you get the desired look.  Trim as required.

SMALL PATCH

Using 6.5 mm hook 

Ch 9

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch and each ch across (8)

Rows 2-8: Sc in 1st and each st across (8)

Row 9: Sc2tog, sc across, sc2tog over last 2 sts (6)

Row 10: Sc2tog, sc across, sc2tog over last 2 sts (4)

Row 11: Sc2tog, sc across, sc2tog over last 2 sts (2)

Row 12: Sc2tog (1)

LARGE PATCH

Using 6.5 mm hook 

Ch 9

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch and each ch across (8)

Row 2: 2 sc in 1st st, sc in each st across, 2 sc in last st (10)
