Stretchy Crochet Spa Headband with Bow – Free Pattern

In my house even my boys are constantly scouting around for headbands while they do their nightly ablutions. Yup! Any one who remembers my kids modelling my designs probably remember the long hair.  I have never purchased these myself but was gifted one these headbands years ago by my boss – and then again recently at a girls night – what a great gift.  We all loved them! So why not create one I can make exactly to the size, colour and feel I want! 

And of course because it is almost Christmas I had to do a Santa Version! For this version just add a gold row on either side of the centre piece you make for the bow.

So after buying way too much yarn just because I loved the feel of it when making my twisted velvet headband pattern – I needed to find way to use this yarn up.  And so here we are, and I think you are going to love making these easy crochet headbands and even more importantly the people you gift them to are going to love getting them as well!

To make this spa headband, start by covering an elastic headband with single crochet stitches. Then, build the headband body by crocheting in rounds until it’s the width you like. Add a second elastic at the other end by crocheting around it to secure.

For a finishing touch, make a bow with faux fur yarn by, single crocheting across for a few rows, and cinching the center. Weave in any loose ends, and you’re done! This headband is perfect for gifting or creating a cozy spa set.

Free Crochet Spa Headband Pattern

Materials 

• Velvet or Chenille Yarn: Worsted weight or bulky weight yarn for softness and durability.
  Weight: 50 grams or 1.75 oz. Length: 32.5 meters or 35.5 yards15 grams of Faux Fur Yarn: For a chic, fluffy bow centerpiece.
• Crochet Hook: 6.50 mm for headband 9.00 mm for the bow .
• Two Elastic Headbands: One for the headband base and another to finish the edge.
• Tapestry Needle or Yarn Needle: To weave in ends.

Abbreviations

• ch – Chain
• sc – Single Crochet
• sl st – Slip Stitch
• rpt – repeat

How to Resize the Headband

To resize the headband, simply follow the same steps with a smaller or larger piece of elastic to fit the head circumference you need. Then, crochet more or fewer rounds on the headband body to adjust the width to your liking.

For the bow, use more or fewer starting chains and adjust the number of rows to make it larger or smaller. This way, you can easily customize the headband and bow to any size!

Spa Headband Pattern Instructions

Step 1: Cover the Elastic Base

1. Attach yarn to the first elastic band with a slip knot and work single crochet (sc) around the band until fully covered. The elastic provides a snug base, perfect for keeping the headband secure on fine hair.
2. Once the headband is covered in single crochets pull the stitches over to the right to expose 3 – 4 inches of elastic and continue to cover with single crochets.
3. Join with a slip stitch (sl st) to the first sc to close.

Step 2: Create the Body of the Headband – MAKE SURE THE HEADBAND IS NOT TWISTED

1. Round 1: Chain 1, and work 1 sc in each stitch around.
2. Repeat Rounds: Continue working sc rounds until you reach your preferred width of the headband. Typically, 3–5 rounds is ideal for comfortable coverage.

Step 3: Add a Second Elastic Band

1. Hold your second elastic band against the edge of the headband.
2. Final Round: Work single crochets around the second elastic to secure the edge.
3. End of Row: Join with a sl st and fasten off, leaving a long tail for weaving in.

STEP 4: CREATE SMALL BAND

After finishing the headband, create a small band to wrap around the center.

1. Chain 10, sc in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. Ch 1, turn. (9)
2. Sc in each st across, ch 1 turn for 2 rows. Leave a long tail to join the short ends. (9)
3. Next, wrap this small band around the headband. Use the tail to sew or slip stitch the short ends together, securing it snugly around the headband. This forms the loop for the bow to go through.
4. For the Christmas Santa version all you need to do is add an additional gold stripe on each side of the band. Make sure that both rows are added with the same side facing up.

Step 5: Create the Bow

1. With your faux fur yarn and 9.00 mm crochet hook, ch 10.
2. Sc in 2nd ch from the hook and each chain across.  Ch 1, turn.
3. Repeat for 4 more rows.
4. Cinch the centre of the bow by taking a tapestry needle and weaving through the center of the bow.

You are almost done! All you need to do now is slide that pretty bow through the loop we made in step 5!
