This easy crochet headband pattern is one of those quick little projects that is perfect when you want to make something without committing to a big project.
The Whispering Lace Headband uses simple stitches to create a pretty lacy texture that looks much harder than it actually is. It ties at the back, so the fit is easy to adjust, and you only need about 25 grams of worsted weight yarn, perfect for using up some of those leftovers in your stash.
I originally designed this as a summer crochet headband, but really, there is no reason to save it just for summer. Make it in cotton for warmer weather or use your favourite worsted weight yarn for any time of year.
And if you’re newer to crochet, don’t let the lacy look fool you. The pattern is mostly single crochet and chains with a simple repeat that is easy to get into.

About the Whispering Lace Crochet Headband
One of my favourite things about this crochet headband pattern is how simple the construction is.
The headband is worked flat in rows using a repeating combination of single crochet and chain stitches. Once the main section reaches the right length, the ends are worked down and long crochet ties are added.
That’s it!
The ties make the finished headband really easy to adjust, so you don’t have to worry quite as much about getting an exact finished circumference.
It also makes a great little project for leftover yarn. You only need about 25 grams, so have a look through your stash before buying anything new.
Yarn for This Crochet Headband
I used worsted weight #4 yarn for my Whispering Lace Headband.
Cotton is a great choice if you’re making this as a summer crochet headband because it keeps the finished headband lightweight and comfortable. That said, you don’t have to use the exact yarn I used.
Any similar worsted weight yarn that gives you the right gauge should work just fine.
This is also a fun pattern to play around with colour. Make it neutral, bright and summery or match it to an outfit. With such a small amount of yarn needed, you can easily make more than one.
Crochet Headband Size and Fit
The main portion of the headband measures approximately 13 inches before the ties are added.
Because this is a tie-back crochet headband, the finished fit is adjustable. You can also easily customize the size by making the main section a little longer or shorter before working the ends and ties.
This makes it much more forgiving than a headband that needs to fit around the head at an exact measurement.

Free Crochet Summer Headband Pattern
Chain 6
Row 1: (Sc, ch 2, sc) in 2nd ch from the hook, skip next st. *(sc, ch 2, sc) in next, skip next st*. Repeat from * to * one more time for a total of 3 ch 2 spaces. Ch 1, turn. (5)
Repeat Row 2 until pieces measures 13 inches: (Sc, ch 2, sc) in 1st ch 2 space. *(sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 2 space.* Repeat from * to * one more time for a total of 3 ch 2 spaces. Ch 1, turn. (5)
Ends of headband
Row 1: Chain 2, sc in 2nd ch 2 space. Ch 3, sc in last ch 2 space. Ch 1, turn. (2 ch 3 spaces)
Row 2: Sc in 1st ch 3 space. Ch 3, sc in last (2nd) ch 3 space. Ch 1, turn. (1 ch 3 space)
Tie: Slst in ch 3 space and chain 45. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Turn headband to opposite end.
Join yarn with sl st to 1st ch 2 space. Repeat above.
Make It Your Own
There are lots of easy ways to change the look of this free crochet headband pattern without changing the pattern itself.
Try cotton for a lightweight summer version, dig through your leftover yarn, or make a few in different colours. Because they work up quickly and don’t use much yarn, they’re also a fun little make for gifts or craft fairs.
And don’t feel like you have to save this one for warm weather. Change the yarn and colour and it can easily work year-round.
