Summer is my favourite time to dress a little nicer and wear a few more accessories than I do in the colder months. Today I am sharing a new free summer crochet headband pattern that is a great project for using up those leftover skeins of cotton worsted weight yarn from other quick projects and of course is perfect for adding a cute but lightweight headband to your summer outfits.
I love hair bands like this for when I have a bad hair day and want put it up in a messy bun – with this crochet summer headband it just looks a little cuter.
The Whispering Lace Crochet Headband pattern is perfect for any skill level. Made from basic crochet stitches this beautiful crochet summer headband texture comes together using single crochet and chain stitches.
I have made these lacy headbands in both acrylic and cotton yarn but find that cotton really shows this texture the best for these crocheted headbands. Of course, the type of yarn you choose really does come down to personal choice so if you have scraps to use that are acrylic or any other worsted weight yarn – go for it it will still make the perfect hair accessory.
When I was designing this little headband – or I guess really hairband I wanted to make it a little wider than The Summer Breeze Headband to show of the lacy texture but I was a little concerned that it might be too floppy and I wanted to be a sturdy headband so that it would keep my long hair in place.
This was easily achieved by going all the way down to a 4.00 mm crochet hook but I did try them using a crochet hook all the way up to a 6.50 mm – although the lacy texture looks a little different is it is still very beautiful.
If you have scraps that are a different yarn weight try them – I chose worsted weight because I wanted to make these as summer headbands. But something like chunky weight would work too just be sure to change the hook size and keep the length the same as in the written instructions so that you still have a snug fit.
These easy crochet headbands make great gifts, craft fairs, and party favours, it’s a great way to use up leftover yarns that you have been stashing and these don’t take much yarn so hang onto those scraps as you have them.

Dishie is probably the closest match to Handicrafter in terms of texture and weight. It’s a worsted weight 100% cotton that’s slightly smoother than Handicrafter, but still super durable. It also comes in a huge range of colours.
Lily Sugar’n Cream
Another long-time favourite, is Lily Sugar’n Cream in both weight and texture. It’s also 100% cotton and super sturdy, with a slightly more rustic feel. It works up nicely for everything from dishcloths to baskets and is widely available in stores.
You can’t go wrong with any of these! If you’re not sure what to choose, Knit Picks Dishie is a top pick when people want something super close to Bernat Handicrafter, especially for beginner-friendly projects.

Construction of the Headband
This is such an easy crochet headband pattern especially for fitting your head size perfectly!
To start you crochet the main part of the headband I have put the measurements below but because we are working width wise you can simply do more or less rows to change the length if you want to customize the sizing even more.
The most important thing to remember (I realized this after I had made many of the headbands before adding the ties) is that the scalloped portion at the end will add extra length to the total length of the pattern almost 2 inches. Then the ties add more length of course but the main part cannot be longer than your head or it will be too big when tied.
Then the scalloped portion is added along with the ties. Voila! All done. It really couldn’t be easier!

Chain 6
Row 1: (Sc, ch 2, sc) in 2nd ch from the hook, skip next st. *(sc, ch 2, sc) in next, skip next st*. Repeat from * to * one more time for a total of 3 ch 2 spaces. Ch 1, turn. (5)
Repeat Row 2 until pieces measures 13 inches: (Sc, ch 2, sc) in 1st ch 2 space. *(sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 2 space.* Repeat from * to * one more time for a total of 3 ch 2 spaces. Ch 1, turn. (5)
Ends of headband
Row 1: Chain 2, sc in 2nd ch 2 space. Ch 3, sc in last ch 2 space. Ch 1, turn. (2 ch 3 spaces)
Row 2: Sc in 1st ch 3 space. Ch 3, sc in last (2nd) ch 3 space. Ch 1, turn. (1 ch 3 space)
Tie: Slst in ch 3 space and chain 45. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Turn headband to opposite end.
