Tomorrow is International Granny Square Day, (scroll down to find out about my giveaway 2025!) which basically means Instagram is about to turn into one big, happy digital afghan. For 24 hours, it’s wall-to-wall squares, some vintage, some modern, some suspiciously perfect for someone “just winging it.”
Every August 15, we stitch, snap, and post our grannies using the hashtag. It’s fun. It’s low-stress. It’s peak “slow craft” vibes. And honestly, it’s kind of adorable and wonderfully nostalgic hmm, mmm for those of us at a certain age 😉.

Why granny squares refuse to go out of style
Let’s rewind to the 1970s, a time when I was working hard on my Farrah Fawcett hairdo – and I mean obsessively! Fashion was loud, colours were louder, and everything had a fringe. Granny squares were everywhere. Blankets, vests, cushions, ponchos, and yes – the infamous matching crop-top-and-pants sets. I didn’t have one but if I did I would have wanted one in the photo below, and now that I could actually make one – well lets just say my butt would use up wayyy to much yarn to cover!

Guess she didn’t have much luck with the Farrah Fawcett hair either!

But here’s the thing: granny squares never really went away. They just bided their time, waiting for the grandmillennials to show up with their plant babies, vintage tea cups, and deep love for handmade everything. And now? They’re back. Bold, bright, and borderline smug.
So whether you love building motifs one at a time or working the granny stitch in glorious spirals, there’s a version of “granny” for you. I’ve designed a bunch of free patterns (scroll down to find out about my giveaway 2025!) that celebrate both flavours—and they’re all linked below so you can jump right in.
