In crochet, gauge is what controls the size and shape of your project. It’s usually listed as something like:
“16 stitches and 8 rows = 4 inches”
If your stitches are bigger or smaller than the designer intended, your finished piece won’t come out the right size. Especially for garments or hats, this can make a big difference.
When you use a different yarn than what’s listed in the pattern, your gauge will most likely change.

How to Read the Results: Green ✅, Yellow ⚠️, and Red 🛑
When you use the Yarn Substitution Calculator, you’ll get a colour-coded result that helps you know what to do next:
✅ Green = Excellent Match
If your gauge is really close to the pattern, you’re good to go! Your yarn is a great substitute, and your project should turn out just as expected.
⚠️ Yellow = Proceed With Caution
This means your yarn is a little off. You might be able to make it work — especially for non-fitted projects like scarves, shawls, or dishcloths. You may want to try adjusting your hook or swatching first.
🛑 Red = Do Not Use
This yarn is just too different. Even with a different hook or tension, the project likely won’t turn out right. Save yourself the trouble and try a closer match.
Example: Swapping Cotton for Acrylic
Let’s say your pattern calls for Lily Sugar’n Cream cotton yarn, but you want to use Red Heart Super Saver acrylic instead.
You plug in the gauges:
- Pattern: 14 stitches in 4 inches
- Yarn: 12 stitches in 4 inches
The calculator lets you know this is too far off — and suggests you choose a different yarn or adjust your hook to match the gauge more closely.

How to Match Thicker Yarns by Holding 2 or 3 Strands Together
Can’t find a bulky yarn to match your pattern?
One of the best tricks in the crochet toolbox is to hold two or three strands of thinner yarn together to get the gauge you need. It’s a great way to use what you already have — especially if you have a big stash of worsted or DK weight yarns.

Tip: Always swatch! Even when doubling yarn, the fibres and spin can affect the gauge. Use the calculator to compare your new swatch to the pattern’s gauge.
