Crochet Baby Newsboy Cap With Rose

Sun, snow, cold or warm a newsboy cap is perfect in cotton and acrylic.  This crochet brimmed hat is constructed working increasing rounds from the top down.

dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
st – stitch
sts – stitches
sl st – slip stitch
rpt – repeat

MATERIALS
5.5 mm hook
6.5 mm hook
Buttons (optional)
Tapestry Needle
Stitch Markers

Worsted weight yarn (100g) I used Vanna’s Choice

 

MEASUREMENTS/SIZING
0 to 6 months – 14.5” x 6”

 

0 to 6 Months

*Hat is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join. Use a stitch marker at the beginning of round for easier counting

Using 6.5 mm hook ch2
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd st from hook. (6)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in 1st st and each st around (12)
Rnd 3: 1 sc in 1st st *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st* rpt from * to * till end of rnd (18)
Rnd 4: 1 sc in 1st 2 sts *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts* rpt from * to * till end of rnd (24)
Rnd 5: 1 sc in 1st 3 sts *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 3 sts* rpt from * to * till end of rnd (30)
Rnd 6: 1 sc in 1st 4 sts *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 sts* rpt from * to * till end of rnd (36)
Rnd 7: 1 sc in 1st 5 sts *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 5 sts* rpt from * to * till end of rnd (42)
Rnds 8-15: Sc in 1st st and each st around. (42)

Change to 5.5 mm hook
Rnds 16-18: Sc in 1st st and each st around (42)

BRIM (will be worked in rows)

With right side facing, join yarn with slip stitch in 11th st from fasten off point.

Row 1: Working in front loops only, sc in 1st 3 sts, 2 sc in next, sc next 9 sts, 2sc in next, sc next 3 sts, ch 1 turn (19)
The rest of the pattern will be worked through both loops
Row 2: Sk 1st st, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next, sc next 6 sts , 2 sc in next, sc next 4 sts, sk next st, sc in last, ch 1 turn (19)
Row 3: Sk 1st st, sc across, sk 2nd to last st, sc in last st, ch 1 turn (17)
Row 4 : Sk 1st st, sc across, sk 2nd to last st, sc in last st (15) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join yarn at the centre back fasten off point and work either rsc or sc around entire cap, including brim.

ROSE

Row 1: Ch 55, 1 dc in 5th chain from hook, *Ch 1, sk 1 ch, (dc, ch1, dc) in next st* rpt from *to* till end of row, ch 2 turn
Row 2: *(hdc, 4 dc, hdc) 1st ch1 sp, sl st in next ch1 sp* rpt from *to* till end of row.
Roll rose into shape very loosely so that rose stays large and flat.
