Whether you are a new mom with a new baby, photographer or making something special for a baby shower this free crochet baby bonnet pattern just might be exactly what you are looking for!

I’ve included three sizes in this pattern: 0-3 months3-6 months, and 6-12 months. Babies grow so fast, and I wanted to make sure you can create a newborn baby crochet baby hat that fits just right at every stage. Whether you’re making it for your own little one or as a gift for baby showers, these sizes should cover all the bases.

If you have never made a crochet bonnet before you may think it looks confusing – it is so simple!  Starting just like a regular hat you will work increase rounds the difference being what is usually the top of the hat- is actually the back of the bonnet once the increase rounds are done you stop joining and start working in rows.  The end of each row being the bottom of the bonnet.  It’s that simple you will have an adorable baby bonnet made before you know it!

If you’ve got some beautiful variegated worsted weight yarn in your stash, this is the perfect project to use it on. That being said the simple combination of double crochet stitches and chain stitches looking stunning in a solid yarn as well.

Let’s talk gauge for a moment. I know it can be tempting to skip this step (I’ve done it myself more times than I care to admit!), but getting the right gauge is crucial for sizing. For this crochet baby hat, you’ll want to work up a small swatch in the basic stitches to make sure your gauge matches the one in the written pattern. If your stitches are too tight, the bonnet might come out too small, and if they’re too loose, it could be too big. A little time spent on gauge now will save you frustration later.
