Why I Chose Cotton Yarn for the Free Crochet Tote Bag Pattern
This bag will work up great in any yarn and really the first reason I chose cotton yarn is because I had already made the crochet Lacey Sun Hat up in cotton and I wanted this to match.
However, that aside I would have chosen cotton yarn because it is super sturdy. Cotton doesn’t stretch too much, which makes it a perfect choice for a crochet bag that you may not be planning on lining.
Also, if you choose to crochet your own straps make sure that you crochet them as tight as possible so that you don’t get a lot of stretch – something like single crochet worked through both loops will result in a really nice sturdy strap. (If you would like a separate post on that let me know in the comments)

Super Easy Textured Stitch – Even a beginner can do it!
Summertime is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the weather. What could be better than spending a lazy day outside working on this fun crochet tote?
This super easy lacy texture works up so much faster and easier than you would think.
To work this pattern, you will need to know how to make single crochet, double crochet and chain stitch. If you are new to crochet, don’t worry – the video tutorial above will show you how to do all of these stitches.
This project is worked in rounds, so be sure to use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.
How do you add round handles to a crochet bag?
Attaching the handles to the crochet tote is way easier than you might think! If you have ever crocheted around and elastic it is just like that!
Simply work single crochets around the handle and it will be firmly attached.

YARN CHOICES
The Lacey Free Crochet Tote Bag pattern works up great in a cotton, cotton blend and acrylic yarn beautifully! The yarn I used for this hat was the Bernat Handicrafter cotton but really any cotton or cotton blend will work.
COTTON
Is a great choice for a sturdy crochet bag that won’t stretch too much!
Another advantages to using cotton is that it doesn’t pill and really shows off this stitch beautifully! If you do decide to use cotton yarn be sure to lay the hat flat after washing!
Remember, cotton can get very heavy when wet and you don’t want your beautiful project to lose its shape after washing it.
I used Bernat Handicrafter yarn but for even more great colour choices be sure to check out Dishi Cotton Yarn
ACRYLIC
This crochet tote bag can also be made in acrylic, which is great for fall and transition months.
It would work up in Vanna’s Choice or any of the stiffer worsted weight yarns. Acrylic yarn is great for cooler days, it is soft, easy to work with, washes beautifully and rarely will garments lose their colour even upon multiple washings.
With so many acrylic yarns available the colour choices are endless.

Repeat Rounds 13 and 14 until total height of bag reaches 14” or desired size. Fasten off.
How to Attach Round Handles
Note: Be sure to attach handles with the inside of the bag facing you. If you don’t you will have a seam on the outside of your bag.
First Handle
With this inside (wrong side) of the bag facing you and the fasten off point on the right hand side, count the chain 2 spaces from left to right and mark the 4th chain 2 space with a stitch marker.
Locating your starting stitch

Count over the next 6 chain 2 spaces and mark the 7th chain 2 space with a stitch marker.

These stitch markers will represent the first and last chain 2 space that you are working into to attach the handles.
Still with the inside of the bag facing you join the yarn to the bag in the first marked chain two space with a slip stitch.
Lay the handle to align with the slip stitch just made. With the yarn laying over top of the handle, insert your hook under the handle. Finish working a single crochet around the handle to attach. Single crochet around the handle two more times while working in the same chain 2 space.

You should now have 3 single crochets in the first chain two space that are wrapped around the handle.
Continue to work over the next 7 chain 2 spaces working 3 single crochet around the handle for each space.

This is your first handle attached.
Second Handle
You will be repeating the exact same process above but to locate your beginning chain 2 space you will be counting from right to left.
Repeat from: Locating your starting stitch above to attach the second handle.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
