Crochet You Will Love Forever

Free Crochet Blanket Pattern – The Fisherman Throw

April 23, 2021      28 Comments

You are going to LOVE this free crochet blanket pattern! Made using the best crochet stitch for a blanket I can think of, this simple but stunning stitch results in a throw that will fit in perfectly with both modern and traditional decors. easy crochet throw blanket I made mine a few summers ago – as many of you know already I am super slow at crocheting – I did it poolside, at the park, watching TV and pretty much anywhere I sat for any amount of time.  Ziva (my dog) was making it hers before I was even done!  Then again nothing new there 😆🐕 This stitch looks amazing in all yarns and weights so its great for crochet in  any of your favourite yarns.  Just be sure to adjusting your hook size as necessary.   Be sure to keep the hook larger than needed so that yours will have the same beautiful drape as mine does.

Download the BLANKET SIZING CHART so you can choose whatever size you like! Because it is a blanket, and not a garment that needs to fit perfectly we can just make our starting chain the same length as indicated in the chart. If you are making the throw exactly as I did you can scroll down and follow my stitch counts in the pattern 🙂 Printable pattern can be purchased for a few dollars from my Etsy shop Fisherman Throw Pattern Download

THROW 40″ x 60″ (including fringe)

To lengthen or shorten this throw just add or subtract stitches.  Be sure to keep your chain a multiple of 2. With 11.5 mm hook Ch 94 3 skipped chain of row 1 counts as 1st dc Row 1: Dc in 4th chain from hook (this counts as 1st dc), *ch 1, sk next ch, dc in next ch* rpt from * to * ending with dc in last ch.  Ch 2 turn. (91) Row 2: Chain 2 of previous row counts as first hdc.  Dc in 1st ch one row below, ch 1, skip next ch. *Dc in next ch one row below, ch 1, skip next ch* rpt from * to* to last 2 sts  Skip 2nd last st, hdc in last ch.  Ch 2 turn. (91) Rows 3 – 74: Ch 2 from previous row counts as 1st hdc.  Dc in 1st skipped st under ch 1 space, ch 1, skip next st, *dc in skipped st under ch space, ch 1 skip next st* rpt from *to* to last 2 sts, sk next st, hdc in last st.  Ch 2 turn  (91) Note: At the end of row 74 only ch 1. Finishing row: Sc in 1st ch space, dc in skipped stitch under ch space, (sc, dc in skipped st under ch space) rpt () in each ch 1 space till end of row. End with hdc in last ch.   Fasten off and weave in ends. Weave in all ends and secure with Fray Check – make sure that you fasten off on the same side for all ends – this will become the wrong side of the throw.  Handy Hint – I don’t cut ends until the very last step that way the wrong side is always clearly visible. beige textured crochet blanket

FRINGE (Optional)

Fringe is placed in the end of every other row evenly across bottom and top of throw. Cut 296 (or 4 at a time) pieces of yarn approximately 16 inches long. beige textured crochet blanket Fold 4 pieces of yarn at a time in half and hold bottom of throw with wrong side facing you, use hook to draw the folded ends around the stitch pulling from right side under stitch back up through to right side again. Pull the loose ends through the folded section and draw the knot up not too firmly. Repeat in the end of every other row.  Once fringes are all attached lay flat on hard surface and trim to straighten the bottom of the fringe.  I cut mine at 6 inches measured from top of knot.

Thank you for this beautiful pattern! Can’t wait to get started on it. My main question is about your dog … He/ she is pretty darn adorable!!! What kind of dog is that? I want one!

Hi there. I love this pattern and your throw looks so cozy!! I’m worried about how my throw will end up. At the moment I still have another 20 inches to go and I’ve used up all my skeins. I’m using super bulky Wool Ease thick and quick in wheat and a 10mm hook(largest I have). I think my throw is just s little stiff and not going to be as “drapey” as yours appears. Not sure if I should continue. Would love your thoughts.

Hi there. In total does this use 1500gms of wool? I’m looking at wool prices here in Nz and it’ll cost me around $500 😭 (wool/alpaca blend) $36/100gm

Hello, if I wanted to create the blanket 50×60 instead of 40×60 would that change things drastically? Or would it just add a few more stitches? This is my first time crocheting so I’m still figuring things out lol

Hey Lauren – no that is perfectly ok :). Just chain to the width you want and go from there. The size may change a little due to the stitches but not too much.

If this is your first time you may want to try this first – much smaller project until you get used to working the stitches and rows etc. https://youtu.be/PG1D0cbCEgY This is also a beginner tutorial so a lot more instruction with this one.

      Good luck!

Hi, I’m working on this blanket now and it’s an awesome pattern, I was wondering if I didn’t want to add the tassels but wanted to do a border, do

      Hi Erica 🙂

Perhaps a row of single crochet all the way around followed by another row of reverse single crochet all the way around? That could be quite pretty. Because the texture is the feature of this pattern I would keep the edging simple IMO 😉

Let me know what you end up doing I’d love to see it!

Hi and thanks for the suggestion, what I’m having trouble with now is figuring out the number of stitches going down the sides..

It can be very tricky but try to find where the end of the row is the half double crochet and work into there. If the blanket starts to pucker or stretch undo your stitches to before that part and work a few less or more. As long as it looks good you don’t really need to be concerned about where or how many stitches you are working.
          Hope this helps.

It may have I have had a hard time too – I recommend substituting with a bulky yarn – which has a much closer gauge than a worsted weight. Just make sure that the recommended hook size is no larger than a 6.5mm or if it is go up a hook size for the pattern so that the drape is still nice and not too stiff.

Help please! I’m so frustrated…I have the 1st row down pat but when I do the 2nd row it’s not coming out right and I end making the 2 rows you talk about. I’ve watched your video over and over and I just can’t get it. I know it has to be something simple but I’m just can’t figure it out. I’d greatly appreciate any help.
    Thank you!

If I were to make this blanket with a velvet yarn, would you suggest I use the same yarn for the fringe or would you recommend something else?
    Thanks!

Funny you should ask because i am planning one in velvet yarn too! I am using the worsted weight so am going to use the same yarn.

I find these instructions very hard to follow. You say the first chain three is your first double crochet. In your instructions below that for the first row you say the double crochet in the fourth chain is first double crochet.

Also what do you consider the row below? Do I crochet into the row below the one I’m crocheting on?

Your products are beautiful but I’m not sure I can follow the directions as written.

I see your chart on blanket measurements but not sure how to translate that to stitches. If I want to make a queen size throw with the fisherman’s stitch, how many chain stir patches do I start with? I may not add fringe.

The easiest thing to do is just create your beginning chain to the measurement on the chart – then count your stitches. Be sure to keep a multiple of two!
